The opium story....

Is there any truth to the tale that Lewis Carrol was smoking large amounts of opium around the time he sat down and wrote this book? Some fool tried to tell me it was LSD, which is rather stupid since LSD (as far as I know) is only a very recent drug.
The opium story....and Dali

as far as I know, the basic indegredients and effects of LSD were known for a long time...there are some information of the web, somewhere.
What I wanted to add, is that Salvador Dali was also impressed by the story of Alice, and made a sculpture. I've seen it (it's in Paris in the Dali exhibition), it's really great.
