A Conversation for Music

There are only TWO (2) categories of music, and they are very personal and
subjective and differ from person to person: there is music one likes and music one
doesn't like. So all one has to do is listen to a piece of music, and afterwards one can
decide in which category to put it... The strange thing is that no matter in which
category one puts a piece of music, it is never final... One can always change a piece
of music from one category to the other, and back, and so on...

Well..i suppose it depends whether your talking about categories as Pat initialy defined them,i.e what you like and what you dont; or categories as in type...jazz fans, for example might prefer,oh, i dunno,Count Basie over say Duke Ellington; but somebody else might argue the merits of somebody else on the jazz scene;nevertheless both folk like jazz...whilst a pop fan might not like jazz but might prefer whoever was in the Hit Parade (showing my age!) last week/month
year rather than whoever is there now..Or alternatively last years hit is this years cringe maker.
Now i'm confused!

Wel, i still have to find this other category within me, as almost all music i hear i like/think its ok/love it/play it as loud as i can.
I'm not a pop fan, but i despise the cheesiness of the music- though they are (usually) professional musicians and know how to make a good tune sound well with a few drum loops and vocals
-and that's what i hate- i despse the kind of music (Pop i.e. s culb 7 steps hearsay, etc)
but they make repetitive catchy melodies which in turn, make you want to punch your radio/TV/wall/anything else

Okay, here is a shortened list of what i like to prove my music tastes..
-Queen
-Moby
-REM
-Manic Street Preachers
-Toploader
-Eminem
-Travis
-Stereophonics
-Semisonic
-Santana
-The Beatles
-Dido
-John Lennon

Well, too many to list, but i like "pretty much" everything smiley - smiley

Music is all to do with personal taste, if you don't like something it doesn't mean you should discriminate against those who like them...my rule of thumb is if you your friend - who says your music is crap - reply yes to any of the following you can't have that bad a taste in music smiley - winkeye

"Do you like: Queen, REM, The Beatles, The Clash or U2?"

All music overlaps at one stage or another even if you don't realise it...like The Beatles...everyone knows at least one Beatles song even if they don't realise it...it's instinctive...they should really have been called Foetles smiley - smiley

I agree with ____________________ and like most from the list you gave...my taste is fairly varied, going from new stuff like Pink to James Taylor, I love finding new interesting music, my fav bands tend to be illusive:
- Halfcocked
- Nerf Herder
- Four Star Mary
- The Beta Band
- Letters to Cleo
and then there's the slightly more well known:
- Badly Drawn Boy
- Nirvana
- Sheryl Crow
- Greenday
- The Strokes
- Weezer
- Oasis
- Muse
and many many more...

anything with good lyrics and a good bit of drum and guitar smiley - winkeye

What's your favourite way to listen to music?
Vinyl? CD's? MD's?

(Sorry for rambling but it's not often you stumble across a post that won't result in someone immediatly telling you you've got rubbish taste in music.smiley - smiley)

Thank you for restoring my faith in my music tastesmiley - smiley

Currently I've very into vinyl, there's something wonderfully personal about it, I don't even mind the pops and jumps.

I agree wholeheartedly on the tape front, they do kinda suck, i only listen to them in the car althought that has more to do with the car being the only place i have a tape player...even though despite 17 a couple of days ago I've started to learn to drive...MD's I really like, I tried for a while to carry around my CD walkman in school but it was a nightmare to get in and out of my pocket lol

I haven't really done the whole download music thing, my computers memory isn't very large and I use a lot of CAD programs which takes up a lot of RAM...but maybe I'll save up for an MP3 and give it a go.
