Cobs are actually mentioned in the entry: " Leaves, corncobs, grass, soil, sand, mussel shells and even coconut shells were all commonly used."
I was reading the travel book by Rory Stewart, The Places In Between, and he mentions villagers in remote parts of Afghanistan using handfuls of dirt and stones and this was in 2002.

A surprisingly large percentage of the world is currently deprived of the dignity of using decent toliet facilities, or *any* toilet for that matter.

but....SAND?! For burying the evidence maybe, but not for getting near any delicate crevices!
