Thanks for the fascinating insight into the history of the team. I worked at Torbay General Hospital in 1980 on my student elective , and went to see the team at Plainmoor while I was there a couple of times. I can't remember who they played, but I do remember there were not many people at the matches and that The Gulls were struggling a bit to score goals!
Ever since that time I have always watched out for Torquay United's results just to see how they are getting on.
I hope they manage another Houdini act this year.

Thanks for an interesting and informative history of the club.Have followed Torquays fortunes for over forty years after having several holidays with an old aunt and uncle in the Livermead part of town.Good luck to the team against Southampton in the cup tomorrow and I hope their fortunes begin to pick up in the league as well.
Did Mike Bateson used to own a double glazing firm or something similar in the 1990's?

Ya, thanks for the comments, not bad for a first try eh?
Never heard anything about Bateson owning a double glazing firm...
Yes, I do hope Torquay escape relegation this year as well, but things are looking pretty bleak at the moment...

Bateson was the owner of Mod-Dec Windows, the company who made his money and who sponsored the team in the early 1990s. The company started with him and his wife making double glazing in their garage, very much a self-made man.

Thanks Skankyrich(?).Thought it would be the same chap I'd seen in the adverts on ITV when I was living in the Barnstaple/Bideford area in the 1990's.
