Sangiovese?

My wife & I drink wine occasionally, usually Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet, nothing really expensive. The local grocery chain has a slick magazine free at their stores, they suggest the usual varieties plus one I've never tried:

Sangiovese (san-joh-VAY-zeh)
Believed to have originated in Tuscany, Sangiovese is one of the top two red grapes in Italy. It produces a versatile, fruity, medium-bodied dry red wine and is also used to make Chianti.

I haven't found any yet, even in that grocery chain, but I'm sure the large downtown wine/liquor chain will have it (Spec's here in Houston). Any comments? I like the fact that its dry ...

The Italians have another name for 'their' Sangiovese (I haven't got a clue what the name is), which is basically a slightly different version of the grape grown elsewhere in the world. I doubt this makes much difference to the average wine drinker, and I only found this out because our local offie was plugging a new line.
I haven't tried it yet, but in the name of research I am quite prepared to try a bottle tomorrow night and report back

I haven't found any yet, Steve - the local place had a few in as a one-off, so I've had to drink rioja instead. I haven't forgotten, though

OK, thanks, no hurry. The Merlot is holding up pretty well for now ...

Totally late to the party here but Mr. Emee and I were recommended a Sangiovese at an anniversary dinner a few years ago. It's wonderful. I especially recommend Santa Christina if you can find it - not terribly expensive to buy it in a liquor store/wine shop.

Late? Sangiovese isn't even cool anymore
I'll keep an eye out for it; thank you for the recommendation. I still haven't found any locally, unfortunately. I'm about to redo the hotel wine list, however, so I could always ask for a sample!

I finally did find a bottle, actually quite a few brands, at Spec's in downtown Houston (with a VERY large wine selection). Good stuff.
