I have an 8 footer in my garden and this is the first year I have appreciated it's common name - it has been covered in butterflies all summer!

I have planted two large masses of them on either side of a flight of steps (at work). At this time of year, you almost have to brush the butterflies aside as you walk up and down them. There are always a lot of migrating Monarch butterflies at the end of summer. They seem to follow the lake shore.

We have a gorgeous budleia in our garden which this summer has been covered in huge numbers of Peacock, a couple of Red Admirals and a Painted Lady (aparently quite rare) butterflies. It's been great.
However, our neighbours budleia is getting out of control and it's roots are breaking through our garden wall. They have more of a tree than a bush.

They tend to be shallow rooted, which can be a problem. But there aren't many shrubs to rival their ability to host a butterfly show.
