A Conversation for Church Tales: Part One
Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, Fressingfield, Suffolk

I visited this church a number of years ago. When I remarked to the lady polishing the brass that I thought it a very pretty church, she replied, "Yes, but isn't it a shame about the vandalism?". I looked about, but saw no signs of damage or graffiti, and she pointed out the carvings on the ends of the pews/benches. They had once had heads, but alas, no longer. I asked "who would do such a thing?" The lady replied, "it was bloody Cromwell's men."
I understand that some of Cromwell's forces had stabled horses in the church during the English Revolution.
