h2g2 The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Earth Edition

Spent a lovely few days on Mull at the end of the summer. My first visit. It really is one of the loveliest of the more accessible islands.

Now a few comments and one correction:

- Caledonia MacBrayne is spelt that way (you are missing an "a") and has a very useful website (www.calmac.co.uk).

- The experience of driving to the ferry port (I use the term loosely) at Fishnish or Lochaline is extraordinary since the road just ends in the water. If you're the first to arrive, it can be a bit unexpected.

- In terms of passing places, the road opposite Ulva between Balnahard and Knock has to be seen to be believed. There are overhanging cliffs up one side. We met a coach coming the other way and I still don't know how he got past us.

- Just near Gruline, we came across a sign pointing to the "Macquarie Mausoleum". Intrigued, we followed the road and, in the middle of nowhere, found a little building dedicated to "the Father of Australia". I had never heard of Lachlan Macquarie, but perhaps some of our Australian cousins (especially any from NSW) will find the information interesting. The Griban Cliffs (as mentioned above) have some tales to tell - see A260380 for more info. I am always worried when driving along there as rock falls still occur.

Hmmm, I am gonna have to come back to this when I get more time There is so much on Mull. A quick peek is the 'God is Love' painted on the cliff wall at the far end of Tobermory. Painted there originally by a man of the cloth who's daughter fell of the cliffs there but was unhurt. Each year it is repainted, but nobody knows who by.

Some of these may merit Entries of their own, as I said I will come back to it Until later....
