sorry, i've been away for a few days and missed this.
i couldn't find any official definitions to pass along, but in a geographical sense a salt lick would be a place where salt occurs in nature, most probably in a water source as a lick was likened to a swamp in one of the pages i found. the salt would attract wildlife to a particular spot making that spot known as a lick.
in a more traditional sense, a salt lick would be a block of salt that would be put out for deer or other animals, a hunter might use something like this to attract game (that's just a guess, that it would be used in that manner).
