Note that flageolet is the French for "lima bean." Ocarinas do have a shape similar to that of a lima bean.
Plastice ocarinas have been a mainstay of elementary school music classes as the instruments, if you will, are small and light and inexpensive.

not really. the plastic ones are really cheap and don't have a very good sound. the good quality ones are made of porcelain and will run you about twenty american dollars at the least

The plastic "Mountain Ocarina" is a high-precision instrument which gives a better and more accurate sound than any porcelain model. Every mountain ocarina is identical, and they all play in tune on all the notes.

true but i'd rather suport an artist that hand makes them over a company that mass produces them. and the guy i bought mine from was very talented at making them identical.
