i think i'm correct in saying that owning a ferret is illegal in california. i have absolutely no idea why this should be so.

You're right. Domestic ferret ownership was illegal in California until 4th June this year when SB-89 was passed. This legalises ownership and statutes a licensing fee to fund environmental impact studies.

Is that right? What about native black-footed ferrets?
You're allowed to keep them in NZ but you can't bring any more into the country, 'cause they kill native birds. No-one has them anyway.
