Hello, good evening and welcome
.
It's very nice of you to take the time to drop in.
A bit about what I do
I am a mature student reading Medieval English and History at university, combining study with housewifery and motherhood to a teenager. A lazy, stress-free, laid-back existence of the type to be envied by one and all.
A bit about what I like
I enjoy all kinds of science-fiction / fantasy, including all the usual screen suspects such as Star Wars, Star Trek (yes, even Enterprise), Buffy, Smallville, and Dr Who, though I enjoy reading more. My favourite authors are Katherine Kurtz, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Katherine Kerr, Anne McCaffrey, and Tolkien.
In terms of music, I've been a Duranie for 20-odd years. I was told I would grow out of it, but as yet it hasn't happened... I'm also mad keen on Foo Fighters, Muse, Pink Floyd, Depeche Mode, Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Marillion (the Fish years), David Bowie, RHCP, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Queen, U2... "and many, many more"
Perhaps all this has something to do with my being known as the forty-year-old teenager by my uni cohort, who knows...
A bit about who I am
Just for fun I tried an online personality test (Similar Minds.com). I find these things fascinating and, in case you're interested, here's what the results had to say about me:
"Introverted, secretive, messy, depressed, dislikes leadership, somewhat nihilistic, observer, does not make friends easily, somewhat socially awkward, ambivalent about fitting in, unassertive, feels invisible, feels undesirable, dislikes large parties, values solitude, does not like to stand out, leisurely, suspicious, submissive, abstract, unpredictable, intellectual, frequently second guesses self, likes rain, likes the unknown, negative, weird, prudent, avoidant, strange."
Makes me sound scary but I'm not - honest! Some of it I agree with, but inevitably other bits I don't get. I don't have a problem with leadership or assertion, for example, although I do greatly dislike dealing with the inevitable politics that go with leadership - as in people not being able to separate the individual from the position, especially when having to deal with friends in both a professional and private capacity.
I don't consider myself to be negative or depressed, either. I have down days and doubts every now and then, but I thought that was just part of human nature / life in modern society? I love that the results say I am 'abstract', 'weird' and 'strange' though.
A couple of my favourite quotes
Nam qui falso praedicantur, suis ipsi necesse est laudibus erubescant
(Those who are proclaimed without reason must needs feel ashamed for their praise)
- Boethius
Forþon ne mæg weorþan wis wer, ær he age wintra dæl in woruldrice
(Therefore a man cannot become wise before he possesses a share of winters in the kingdom of the world)
- Anon. Anglo-Saxon poem "The Wanderer", lines 64 - 65a
Lord, if you won't make me skinny, please make my friends fat.
- "Born to Shop" tissue box
A bit about why I'm here
Finding this site was a true joy, and I anticipate many happy times - and maybe some frustrating ones - discovering and debating the viewpoints of other researchers on various topics.
At some point I do intend to submit a few articles for entry to the guide, most likely historical and/or literary, since they are my main fields of academic interest and therefore what I am currently exposed to the most.
For the time being, however, studies and family commitments take up the majority of my time, so don't hold your breath.
Please don't be alarmed if you find your name on my "friends" list and I haven't contacted you. Truth is I lurk a lot, as I tend to sound ridiculous and brainless in most posts, and those listed below are some of the people whose posts I have found interesting, intriguing, thought provoking, or simply darned hilarious, so I like to keep up with what's being posted where.
Thanks for your time,
Ancrene
