Proof that Hitchhiker's has been co-opted
echomikeromeo Started conversation Mar 2, 2006
We got an advertisement in the mail for Target - it's an American chain store ... I don't know quite what the UK equivalent is, but it sells pretty much everything, from clothes to electronics to food to car and kitchen supplies. The advert was for the girls' clothes department and was titled 'A Girl's Shopping Guide to the Galaxy'. It came with a quiz to 'find out your style' and an entry form for a drawing to win Hello Kitty stuff.
Disgusting.

Gerl's shopping guide to the galaxy?
So there are Targets everywhere! Can't get away from the things. They've expanded offplanet; boy does NASA look silly now!

UK equivalent is probably Tesco. They do everything, food, clothes, car insurance, petrol, mobile phones. Its scary they own 1 penny in every 8 on the highstreet. That's more money than the military, and they have more people. I think its a conspiracy, especially when you consider that they make £1 of every £8 that's spent each and every day. One single company shouldn't have that much power, and they certainly shouldn't be able to (and this is the shocking bit) take in £100 for every £800 in people's pockets. Its just quite extraordinary.

Target's not quite *that* extreme. But Tesco's is so famous that even *I've* heard of it! (Actually, I seem to recall going there when in England.)

No, Target still has to compete with Wal-Mart.
I managed to miss Tesco while in London. Drat. And I thought I covered pretty much everything--even 'did' Selfridges.

And Target is actually much cooler than Wal-Mart. Or Mal-Wart, as I believe the Simpsons has it.

Thought it was Sprawl*Mart "Not a Parody of Wal-Mart"
Target is a good store. It's got a much better selection of music, books and DVDs than Wal-Mart. Plus it's not an evil corporation bent on world domination. Well, not as evil.

I'd say that Wal Mart is more comparable to Asda, which I believe it now owns, although I don't think I've ever set foot in an Asda, and I refuse to ever set foot in a Wal Mart again. I still think of Tesco as a supermarket, which Wal Mart definitely isn't, even if it does sell food.
Hmm... Wal Mart is more like a (very, very) downmarket M and S.

I vaguely remember doing a price comparison some years ago and discovering that Target was one average 1 to 2 cents more expensive than Wal-Mart...
But who cares. The real fun in such stores is whizzing down the aisles on your shopping cart.

You're probably right, Jodan. My knowledge of the Simpsons is very limited.
Never heard of this 'Asda'. Most intriguing.
How about Costco? Now that's just about my favourite store.

Gnomon - time to move on Posted Mar 2, 2006
The phrase "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" has certainly entered the English language. Of course we all know how Douglas Adams thought up the idea. Basically, he didn't. He just cogged it in its entirety from The Hitchhiker's Guide to Europe. See Skankyrich's entry for details.

You have a point, Gnomon.
But 'Girl's Shopping Guide to the Galaxy' is still disgusting.
And I just have to try something....

That's an awful lot of Doctors arriving at once, I'm sure that's against the Time Lord rules

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is a wholly remarkable book. It has been compiled and recompiled many times and under many different editorships. It contains contributions from countless numbers of travellers and researchers."
