I have been on wonderful terms with my next door neighbour for over 20 years; but that is all about to go belly up!!
For those of you who have read earlier epistles, you will (particularly Rich and WS) remember the bats. We have enjoyed watching them for some years as they happily emerge from an air vent in next doors bedroom wall.
Now! they are having repairs done and the builders have discovered asbestos in the roof tiles. Up scaffolding today, one shouted to me that I might like to take my washing in as he was going to create a load of mess and dust. As a light hearted comment, I said "try not to wake the bats" That did it! He immediately downed tools and said he couldn't carry on with the job as it was illegal to disturb them (I already knew this).
Oh dear - now we wait for the acrimonious words to flow and then hopefully for the dust to settle.
SS thinks it is one huge joke and made some comment about engaging brain before opening mouth!

might take time, but some society of sorts, could come and err! re-house them, your neighbours should understand this, as bats ARE a protected species.
I hope they do not cause conflict with your Scop' and stay friends

Hi Scorpio, what would alarm me more than the bats is the fact they've found asbestos and then going to create dust and mess!! What if there's asbestos in the dust then? I would suggest contacting enviromental health to be honest, it's a specialist job to remove anything asbestos related. The health risks are extreme to say the least.
You might have, inadvertently, done your neighbour a favour.

I doubt it Scorp, you are like me!! Oh, Scorp, you were only doing your civic duty - tell SS to take a hike
I agree with ST, tell environmental health if there is the slightest risk of asbestos - dust it can be lethal.
Go on, I dare you, make yourself really popular!!!!! There's a bed here if you get kicked out

Oh Dear Scorp.
That reminds me of exactly the same thing as I would do .
I have very fond memories of when we went to France about 12 years ago and we stopped in this large house for a week, well 'gite' in france, I think they call them.
There was a big stable at the back of the house/gite and we literally stopped up all night watching the bats fly in and out of the vent holes at the top .
It was a lovely site and was the first ever time, I had seen a .
Hope everything goes okay, I'm sure it will .
Asbestos is very nasty and the older it gets the worse it is .
Take care

Hi scorp
My daughter and her partner(the one in lincolnshire)inherited bats when they bought their house. They have lots of info about them, and who to get in touch with,if it'llhelp i'll ask her about them for ya!!
They had to halt work on the roof and loft because of them.
You're doing your neighbour a favour when it comes down to it,asbestos(dust) is sooooo dangerous !!!
Hope it doesn't cause any problems for you
