In "The Fabric of Reality," Oxford University physicist David Deutsch describes a simple experiment offering proof that a parallel universe exists.
All that's required is a red laser pointer, a pin, and a piece of paper.

well... now i'm so curious.... how does it work?
is there a parallel universe? and if so how can you prove it wiht a pin, lazer pointer, and a piece of paper.... i've got all 3...

I don't know how it works! And I can't find out, either!
If it's any help, I suspect it's something to do with the way that light splits and seems to be in two places at once... same as the principle they're using for teleportation experiments...

Googling, I found several references to the book and experiment but no explanation. 
I wonder if the page was removed cause it infringed on the copywrite of the book.

Dunno. I got the impression the website was just being renovated; I thought it was the author's site. 
I'll keep going back there, just in case it arrrives back again.

Okay!
I'm sure you can figure it out yourself... when you've got a smare minute try shining the laser past the tip of the pin, and onto the paper.
Let me know if anything interesting happens, like the light splitting into two, or bending, or something?
Just guessing that's how it works... try playing around with it.

Well that sounds good... except for the certain death bit...
...the start of it sounds like something else I'd heard, and was going to mention before... but I couldn't really remember it.
Michael Crichton used the same slit/lightwaves example in his book 'Timeline'.

...actually although I /like/ star trek, I've never bothered to watch much of it... I suppose if it comes to that I don't watch much of anything, really...

umm.... well.... because everyone does. its their first reaction. its really not cool to like star trek.
i dont really wathc anything. because we dont get much good here on tv. not by my standards anyway.
