Jerms - a Brief flicker and then gone again.

...to go with my entry on the most infuriatingly absent posting on hootoo.

In "The Fabric of Reality," Oxford University physicist David Deutsch describes a simple experiment offering proof that a parallel universe exists.

All that's required is a red laser pointer, a pin, and a piece of paper.

smiley - laugh /That's/ why this is broken link is so infuriating! smiley - rofl

I don't know how it works! And I can't find out, either!

If it's any help, I suspect it's something to do with the way that light splits and seems to be in two places at once... same as the principle they're using for teleportation experiments...

Googling, I found several references to the book and experiment but no explanation. smiley - cross I wonder if the page was removed cause it infringed on the copywrite of the book.

smiley - laugh Okay!
I'm sure you can figure it out yourself... when you've got a smare minute try shining the laser past the tip of the pin, and onto the paper.
Let me know if anything interesting happens, like the light splitting into two, or bending, or something? smiley - ok

Just guessing that's how it works... try playing around with it.

smiley - erm Well that sounds good... except for the certain death bit... smiley - laugh

...the start of it sounds like something else I'd heard, and was going to mention before... but I couldn't really remember it.
Michael Crichton used the same slit/lightwaves example in his book 'Timeline'. smiley - ok
