I'm back from hols in a place called Cavtat. A lovely little place south of Cubrovnik in Croatia. It was lovely! The weather was good but not stupidly hot and the sea was beautifully clear and I snorkelled for the first time in my life which at my age is a long time to wait, I can tell you.
Hvala is Croatian for thank you and goodbye in the local dialect was adio. What more did I need to know?

Good to know that all the worries about lemons before you left were baseless and that you ended up having a good time.

Another useful phrase is "hmmmmphmmm mmmhhhh shmmmphhmmm shuuuummmmpphh" which means "There's a fish stuck in the end of my snorkel" in pretty much any language smiley - biggrin

Hey, I just met two Croatian guys here in Harvard. They are funny but have way too much bravado.

What was your impression of the people there? Maybe it's just these two that act like impish teen boys.

Croatians - pretty much like everyone else were a mixture of all sorts of people. Some had difficulty smiling at us and we wondered whether some people needed to go on a customer service course. "Hvala a nice day!"
Lemons were in plentiful supply and we had fresh lemon drinks quite often which was nice.
I managed to stay upright on the airline stairs and most other stairs we climbed - which was a lot as the room was on the second floor (UK) third floor (US) of the hotel and there was no lift (UK) elevator (US).

There is a lot of hostility under the surface, which is not shown towards tourists, but is still felt towards Montenegrans and Serbs. It is still a case of 'don't mention the war'.

The car numbering system in Croatia tells you where a car comes from DU on a number plate being Dubrovnik for instance - Croatia has about 98% Catholic population. This car numbering system has been changed in Bosnia Herzegovina where a car number showing where you are from can indicate whether you are Christian or Muslim and can lead to violent repercussions. So now they number anonymously.

interesting. i didnt know anything about the licence plates... hmmm...

but heres a question for you... why are the floor numbers different in the UK and US? i assume that canada had the same numbering sysetm as the US...
now.... i wonder if its because of the lobby.... no i doubt that...

Do people in the US label the ground floor as the first floor or something?

The floor you walk into may be called the first floor, the ground floor, or the lower level.

Don't ask me why.

ummm... does the UK maybe have a ground labled 0 or something. i'm not sure but i think in the us the first floor is #1 and so the floor that usually starts with all the rooms is #2 i'm not all too sure on that though...
