Some statistics, from the May/June issue of Utne Reader...

Number of prisoners in the USSR in 1950 (under Stalin) - 1,423 per 100,000.

Number of prisoners in the USA in 2002 - 2,298 per 100,000.

Number of Black men imprisoned the South Africa in 1993 (before the ANC came to power) - 851 per 100,000.

Number of Black men imprisoned in the USA in 2002 - 7,510 per 100,000.

This is not a police state and racism is dead in the United States, right?

Right?

Don't let it have that effect RK. The more people who actually get out to places, find out for themselves what the true reality is & tell folks about it, the more chance that the truth gets told.

Here's just one example. This guy is on death row; having just spent an hour looking at the evidence, i personally think he is innocent; it is up to the rest of you to make up your own minds. (visit the appeal site, link on this page)

BUT he has a slight advantage, he is a white Scotsman, not just an anonymous black face.

Me again!

I am now actively involved in this particular campaign, I don't know many details about all the many prisoners who shouldn't be where they are today, but have read up a lot on this one & i am in email contact with his wife. I have passed on the link for this thread & she may in fact join hootoo soon.

Time is running out for this guy, so if anyone would like to visit the appeal site & give their support, here's a link.

Do please pass it on to anyone you feel may be interested.

The Innocent Scot on Death Row
"I am sure that most of the world's leading forensic scientists in this field would be horrified if they saw the chromatograms used to convict Kenny Richey. If Kenny Richey were executed on the basis of this scientific evidence, then these chromatograms will become historical documents, examined by scientists all over the world to show just how wrong forensic evidence can be. it would be a great tragedy for the future of forensic science." Hi Karen and welcome.
I hope they do the right thingsmiley - blue

There are so many cases like this. People act as if it is possibly one in a million suffering wrongful blame and/or imprisonment.

It seems to be far more common.
The worse the crime-or the higher the penalty ,it is more likely to happen.
Wrongful blame and/or imprisonment is such a travesty.
Disgustingly dark when laziness, lack of time, distortion of facts or money misspent on expert witness (that are not at all)or just needing to get a guy to soothe the public....help to make this happen.

I do not believe in the death penality but if it is to be used there needs to be more checks and balances.(integrity)
There should be a standard minimum requirement of scientific evidence before considering use of the death penalty. The ones they cannot get the proper evidence on should be in for life not death.

I'll read the site again Karen, it has been a while.

I see on the site that his imprisonment contravenes was it the fifth, sixth and eighth Amendments to the US constitution. Is the case being taken to the Supreme Court?

They can't get away with this.

Welcome to h2g2, Karen. smiley - hug

This seems like a particularly dreadful case of injustice even by the generally appalling standards of the American judicial killing industry. The excellent Death Penalty Information Center website now lists 113 Death Row inmates cleared of the crimes for which they were condemned since 1973 (see http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/article.php?did=412&scid=6 for details) and I sincerely hope that Kenny soon becomes number 114. It’s horrifying that people can still be persuaded to believe in a system that gets it wrong so often.

Hi everybody! I've been checking out the site about Kenny Richey. It certainly seems as if there were by far not enough evidence to convict this man of any crime let alone murder!! I'll read some more.
