So it's goodnight from him...
Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like Started conversation Nov 23, 2004
On Saturday night/Sunday morning, my father gave up what has been a somewhat lengthy fight with his ever deteriorating health and passed away. He had had heart surgery, nearly twenty years ago, and had been diagnosed with parkinson's for some time.
He was not a famous man, but most members of this site have one reason to be grateful to him. He was head of the design team for the Marconi Mark IX television camera which was used to broadcast Blue Peter amongst others. I suspect, though I do not know, that chunks of Dr Who must also have been filmed using the Mark IX.
I suppose his greatest triumph was in raising a family of three children without incident or fuss in a world where family tragedy appears increasingly to be the norm. We where never a rich family, but we never needed for anything, and a little wanting never hurt anybody.
I think really, I'd just like to say thank you to him for helping make me who I am today. Most of the bits of me that people like are in some way either part of him, or my mother. The bad bits are mostly mine. Philip Larkin might have been a good poet, but he didn't know all the answers.
So. Goodbye, dad. Thanks for everything.
Donald Alexander Pay. 03/12/24 - 21/11/04.

Thanks guys. It's not all really sunk in yet. Probably won't until the day we of the funeral.
Strange how it still feels like he's only a phone call away...

Sorry to hear that the Daddy will no longer swim with the shoal. he may not have been big in the world but I'm sure he was big in yours Steve. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Much appreciated my friends. I see that you are both engaged as the same cardboard box, fun filled thing of moving as well.
Albeit that Gosho' appears to be taking things to extremes and moving across continents...

My sympathies, Blues Shark.
My daughter in law just lost her grandmother. It's a sad year...
Your dad sounds like he was a wonderful person...

I'm so sorry to hear this Blues Shark, your dad was a great character. I hope that you and your family okay and that your mum isn't on her own at the moment.

Thanks Guys. So far I'm just kind of numb, but it will really sink in when we have to do the crematorium bit.
I've also got the job volunteered by family) of writing a) the letter to go out to those who aren't being phoned and b) the addres to be given at the funeral. I'm hoping that will help.
The PM result came in today and, with no surprise to the family, it was a heart attack.
