Death in Texas
There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho Started conversation Feb 5, 2003
Not an uncommon occurrence in these parts, what with the gun culture down here, the drivers who couldn't give a flying f**k about anything but driving something bigger than anyone else and driving it harder and faster, and a (so-called) justice system based on revenge.

May I draw your attention to the final paragraph, which I'll reproduce here in case the page is updated in the future:
"Texas State authorities have never responded to a foreign plea for clemency, and the state has already executed six people this year."
It's February 4th.
There's a mind-boggling lack of respect for human life in Texas.

Gosho, sorry but sometimes it has to be said - you live in a land of barbarians.

I have to agree with you GD People here definately still have a "You killed my brother" attitude. And although it wasn't in Texas, it wasn't too far away - to see the way way that people jumped up and down with glee at the execution of Timothy McVey was just as disgusting to me as what he did... if it's absolutely certain that he did it.
That's the thing about the death penalty - you can't free someone who's dead if you find out at a later date that they were innocent. Not much incentive to hunt for the truth after the defendant's dead, is there? Firstly, even if you find out that they were innocent, what can you do about it? Secondly, you're laying yourself open to one almighty lawsuit from their relatives.

The governor of Illinois, spurred by a number
of recent DNA-based discoveries of innocence,
granted clemency to all the prisoners on death
row in his state. He said that the death penalty
is too flawed to be retained.

I recall that story a few weeks ago. I don't know what his motivation was for doing that... I'd like to think it was for the right reasons.

I certainly hope so ... I was also hoping that others would follow his lead.

From Tom Lehrer's song "Send the Marines:"
Members of the corps
All hate the thought of war.
We'd rather kill them off by peaceful means.....

It's time for another Tom Lehrer quote/paraphrase:
"There are people who do not love their
fellow human beings, and I hate people like that."
