London Autumn meet update; evening venue?
London Spring-Summer meet 2011- A79731967 Started conversation Oct 3, 2006
its getting close now So we really oughta decide on the evening venue. Looking at the number signed up as definates at the moment I think we're too low on numbers for us to be able to do our useual trick of booking a pub in the 'city'; normally this is a pub that doesn't open on Saturday evening which opens special for us as it were, but obviously in order to do this we have to convince them we're going to make it worth their time and effort (and money) to open special for us; with so few signed up this is really not now a viable option; Roymondo and I found a very nice pub on Judd street a while ago, and we chatted up the barman (stop that giggling at the back), but the kind of figures we were talking about was a group of near-50 people (yeh we were being a bit over-optamistic).
The two main suggestions thus far is that we meet up in the Princess Louise, High Holborn, where we've had a fair few mini meets in the past and also where often we would meet up in the afternoon when a main London meet was taking place, before heading to the evening venue later on.
There is a guide entry on the Princess Louise (not edited) over at : A2426988
The other suggestion is that we go to the weatherspoons pub which is also near High Holborn tube which is called the Shakespeare's Head- Africa House
64-68 Kingsway
Holborn
London
WC2B 6BG.
There is a bit of info about it at : http://www.fluidfoundation.com/venueDetails.asp?BarRef=2062
And a bit more here:
http://www.beerintheevening.com/pubs/show.shtml/38/
Of course if anyone knows of a suitable venue that meets our requirements then please suggest it here! : Basically we need somewhere thats got a half-decent range of booze on offer (real ale please ) if it does food that'd be really handy for htose of us who otherwise wouldn't manage to find somehwere to get food earlier, and it of course needs to be open on a Saturday (the 21st Oct), and not be too busy a pub....
Question number 1 (20 marks).

I seem to remember that the Shakespeare's Head is a big open sort of place, but not being local, I really can't express any preferences.

Yeh, that was the one which was all kind of on the same level floor wise, whilst the Princess Louise I think had steps in various places up to bits and down to the horrid smelling loo's

From the above descriptions I'd say go for the Shakespeare's Head - open space, good beer selection, and perhaps less smelly toilets until 2legs arrives

Shakespeare's Head gets my vote - not being a worker I need the cheap booze!

The Princess Louise also has cheap booze - it's a Sam Smith's establishment. They sell brands of beer and spirits not seen anywhere else!
But yes, I think a change is as good as a rest, and the smell of the toilets in the PL is a powerful argument against it.
I vote for the Shakespeare's Head as well (in case that wasn't clear ).

I've never ventured into the SH. Is it likely that we could book a corner?
*ducks before the 'smoking or non-smoking corner' debate starts raging.*

Wouldn't have thought so, as it is a WearySpoons. But you never know. No harm in asking though.
BTW, for those who missed or haven't accessed the Afternoon event meet, I'm borrowing (and promise to return it ) a little space here for my recent ing there!
>>Folks. It appears that those HooTooers who expressed an interest in an afternoon event have now made their choices, and so I am going to say that the afternoon event will be a visit to The London Wetland Centre, Queen Elizabeth Walk, Barnes.
If possible, could attendees be at the Centre by 12:00, or Hammersmith Bus Station at 11:30. The reason is that by around 16:00 the light becomes a little awkward for comfortable viewing.
Also I would like to know the numbers of people who would be interested in eating before going to the Evening Meet, so I can get the catering in place.
I shall be providing three pairs of Binoculars and a telescope to save people carrying them all day. Bin's can be hired at the Centre for £5:00.
I hope this works for everyone. If further info is required, drop me an e-mail, via the address on my PS, including H2G2 in the subject box.<<
Many Thanks, and see you all in a fortnight...

I'll do my best to be there by 12:00, fiddler, but our flight only comes into Heathrow at about 10, so I don't know how long it will take from there.

I believe that is accurate. It's certainly within a hundred yards of the correct location.
