Normal service will be resumed...

On Friday I shall be spending most of the day at Grimsby hospital and, if all goes well, will have a swanky new hip fitted at the crack of dawn the following Friday(May 1st)smiley - starsmiley - star

Please give up this seat

to people who are elderly or disabled. Despite having pretensions to both (I'm nearly 72 and waiting for a hip replacement), I was pleasantly surprised when a young man with a face full of metal, including a ring through his nose, leapt to his feet this evening.smiley - starsmiley - star

I have made a start on the magnum opus

I have found a nice thick, lined notebook lurking on one of my bookshelves and started jotting notes on an alphabetical basis.
It goes from Addis Ababa, Aston, Aidan (the oldest grandson) to Zeitlyn, Cameroon and Zomba Malawi, taking in 72 years en route.
There will be several pages of family tree and a CV, also my Desert Island Discs.
Alphabetical rather than date bound will make it easier to complete.(DV and WP)
At present I have nothing listed under Q or X and only Korup (the rainforest in Cameroon) under K which is a cheat as I never managed to get there, so suggestions welcome.
I shall be including as many photos as possible.
"I may", as Oates said, "be some time". Especially as I also have large knitting and crochet projects to finish. smiley - starsmiley - star

Birthdays and birthyears

My "twin daughters" were born 39 years ago in the 7th Day Adventist clinic in Blantyre, Malawi. Lack of scans in African hospitals in those days meant that Gordon's very energetic pre-birth movement had the midwife preparing for twins and everybody "knew" they'd be girls.
A friend with the same blood group stayed off the alcohol for a few days and smuggled in a thermos of G and T the following day when we'd managed without his armful for the Caesar.*
Yesterday I received a very pretty Lunar New Year card with apologies for the lack of sheep. Next month I shall be either 12 or 72 depending on which calendar we're usingsmiley - starsmiley - star

Skewing a survey

Grandson skyped this morning to enquire about conditions in the house I grew up in, so, with his father's connivance, I answered the questions relating them to the cottage my mother and I were evacuated to.
No gas, electricity or running water in rural Cornwall. His attempt to draw a picture of its kitchen was a combined stretch of three imaginations.
I have only one real memory: my father came home on leave when I was 2 and I remember the rough material of his uniform but I have several false memories formed from tales told by him and my mother: I know, for example that there were 13 brass knobs on the kitchen range to be polished and that the irons were heated on the stove rather than filled with coals.smiley - starsmiley - star
