Today we trekked to St. John, the second-closest town, where our appliance dealer lives. We ordered a new dryer. This was necessary because the one we inherited with the house gave up the ghost, and neither of us wanted to go back to hanging out laundry on the outside lines, especially with it having snowed last night. So it goes. We were planning to do this just before the baby arrived anyhow, so it merely means we accelerated the schedule a bit.

8 chicks survived. I think I'm going to order a few more from the hatchery, since the demand for our eggs is still going up, and our stock of frozen chickens is running low.
There was more, I'm sure, but I couldn't get through to H2G2 at the time that I wanted to make a journal entry. So I suppose this Sunday will just slip away quietly into the mists of time.

We got up to 8 or 9 baby chicks today. One didn't survive; dunno what was wrong, but I found it dead on one of my periodic checks. Mother and the rest seem to be doing fine, and I'm making progress on getting their new home ready despite what seems like endless dreary rain.
Took the day off from writing about software to just work in the yard (rain and all), cruise the web, and read.

Baby chicks are still hatching; there are at least 5 in there, but I suspect more. Mom is still covering them most of the time. There are still eggs left too, so she's not done trying to hatch them. I spent some time today trying to ready the new room of the chicken coop for this brood. Hopefully we'll get them out there by the end of the weekend.
Ducklings are still growing fast, too.

The first baby chicks hatched from eggs here were born today. I guess this means that at least one of the roosters is fertile. So far we've heard a lot of peeping, but seen no more than three chicks at a time. In a day or two mother hen will get off the nest and we'll know more. The other chickens were harassing her, so we moved the nest box into the poultry isolation ward (aka guest bathroom) inside. Tomorrow I'll start clearing out the back room of the chicken coop for the new additions to live in while they grow large enough to interact with the flock.
Also today I finished another book chapter and plugged away at accounting that I am way behind on finishing. It was rainy all day so I took a day off from gardening and yardwork.
