You wouldn't be diving into any pools here today. There'd be a quarter inch of ice over it. smiley - brr

I think we are safe again from any level of election for maybe a year or so.

Oh good, because of all the scandals this week our government won't dare hold one

Our current federal team seems to be doing mostly okay. Sure there have been a few flubs and gaffs, but on the whole, they are holding their own. Not bad for a minority government, eh?

One day, I just may run. As soon as I can come up with a believeable platform. smiley - doh

Well, I've had no luck with winning a lottery ... buying a semi-tropical island ... and setting myself up as King (the Queen always has veto power, of course) so maybe a lesser aim such as Prime Minister? Hell, look at some of our recent history? Shadow-the-smiley - cat has a better chance. smiley - laugh

Well here we are the day after and a labout country we now are from sea to shining sea and at two levels of our system though from WA's response voting for the Libs the next state election will see the labour people out here.

It was actually really cool yesterday working the polling place I enjoyed helping people take part answering questions counting the ballots at close of voting and being in the know beofre others for our area.

It was exciting to see democracy in action though i confess that I don't understand some of the attitudes I saw people who couldn't be bothered to think about their vote, when I think about people in pakistan or Iraq and how they are fighting to have their count I can't help wonder if people here might not be more grateful for the process if they had the same conditions that are at present in Burma, Pakistan or a number of other countries Okay I am off my soap box now

The house was still intact when we got home with the six teenagers all sat outside playing poker and enjoying the summer night while the three little ones slept and the house was still standing.

Speaking of which they ahve just announced they are ready to be off back to the city smiley - run

So being 'the house', did you get a share of any poker stakes? smiley - laugh

Indeed, I don't understand some folks attitudes about voting either. People moan and whinge about the politicians we get, the unethical things they do, and yet can't be bothered to express their opinions in the only way we can. Vote !!! My daughter is now 26, and hasn't voted once.

Hi, guys,
the great democracy lady smiley - hug
and the future power-man in particular smiley - cheerup
My vote will go to Nick, and it'll be the first time I've ever voted smiley - zen
No, I did vote once at a referendum, but I no longer remember what it was about. What I do remember is that it didn't really matter as things went on their own way...
I'm really glad people in Auckland find that democracy does work...
and that their votes do make a difference smiley - ok
We are having parliament elections next Sunday. There's a lot of funny stuff going on...Somehow I can't make myself trust any of the current parties...
smiley - cheers

I hadn't realised that voting was optional in Canada, here if you don't vote you get a fine so people show up and vote even if it is informal...I openeed quite a few ballots to see none of the buggers written or stuff your election written on them....strange response from my perspective because it's everyon's election... John Howard acted like a statesman when he conceded defeat and so did his offsider I think today by saying that he would not take up the leadership but give younger people in the party a go....

Actually a young man that impressed me the most yesterday was the president of the young liberal association, he came inside on behalf of the labour people outside to see if he could get some of their how to vote cards out of the rubbish bins inside as they were running out.

So what has your weekend been like so far and no i didn't get any of the proceeds unless you count their emptyssmiley - erm

Fined if they don't vote? Can you tell me how much?
The government would make a fortune if they fined every non-voter heresmiley - smiley

A Rev Nick Journal: Every 20 years or so ...

Post 178

Rev Nick { Only the dead are without fear }

Indeed, fines for non-voters would really add to the coffers, wouldn't they? I believe our last national election had about a 55% turn-out of eligible people. So in fact, the chap in power now was really only chosen by about 20% of the adults in this country. Pretty sad, eh?

And now, it's just about 4:40 in the morning. A cat decided to be silly and try to fight with anything her found that was smaller than himself. smiley - groan
