Sho's post was very useful.
It was so useful in fact that it pushed me over the line from "That's something I wouldn't mind having a go at" to "Right! Let's do this shit!"

Knitting every row is called garter stitch in my neck of the woods.

Garter stitch! thank you. I would have woken up at 2am worrying about this.
also can I interject here and say that I assumed from the subject that this would be a post where someone was searching for jackets, jodphurs and boots for riding out in?
also thanks for the link - I'll subscribe so I don't miss anything. I've been missing QOTD.

Right, I think I know what things I want to use now, between Sho's comments, Bea's journal, and a few other things I've checked online.
Rules of the project:
1. Wool has to be real wool, from sheep, rather than from petrochemical plants.
2. It has to be finished by Christmas. This might be a stupendously easy goal or a very unrealistic one - time will tell!
3. To be deemed successful, the end result must be something I would willingly wear in public, and I must do so on Christmas Day, weather permitting.

Good luck with it - I look forward to seeing how you get on
My first scarf started out with about 10 stitches and got wider as I kept accidentally dropping stitches and picking up extra ones by mistake but I soon got the hang of it and knitted evenly after the wobbly start. I never did manage a wearable length, but I did choose small needles so it didn't grow fast at all - I moved on to toys intead, and enjoy knitting them more even now, almost 30 years later although I have knitted a good variety of garments as well
I haven't knitted much with real wool, though - I think it is generally heavier than acrylic, so a ball won't go very far, but these days it might be more gossamer like than it used to be as there are some high quality brands out there

Knitting with real wool can be rough on the hands - you'll need some hand cream.
And the tape measure is not for you - it's so you can tell *us* how far you've got!

You're a braver man than I - I've never tried knitting. Good luck!
I wouldn't mind a woolly jumper for riding out in

I'm not a big fan of wool, I usually use cotton. Which means I never knit scarves, as cotton scarves are rubbish, usually.
(I have a nice long Borussia Mönchengladbach scarf anyway - that's enough for anyone)

Don't give up - you can't get it right straight away. If it's not going right, unravel a bit and do it again. Better to practise like that at the beginning, then the finished result will turn out more evenly knitted.

You're right. That's one of the good things about knitting as opposed to eg carving - there's an undo button!
This jobby is going sort of conical.
Key: Complain about this post
