still, if the weather is how it should be (near Malaga) and the sea is clear enough for some snorkeling it'll be just fine and dandy.
any books you can recommend?

I've just finished The Life of Pi by Yann Martel which I enjoyed and if you haven't yet read Religion Explained by Pascal Boyer that is an enjoyable as well as informative read and not at all heavy going so ok for a holiday book.

Hi Jank.
I assume it's you. What did you do to upset the resident dementors. Two permanent poky events in a few days on a comparatively laid back board like h2g2 is something of an achievement.

A few possible for your hols:
Either of the Sean Carroll's on evo-devo.
Atran: In Gods We Trust
Biology as Ideology: The Doctrine of DNA: Richard Lewontin
Galileo: A very Short introduction: Stillman Drake (interesting reinterpretation by a leading Galilean scholar of his relation to religion)
This Is Your Brain on Music: The Science of a Human Obseesion: Daniel J. Levitin
(Interesting response to Pinker's 'Music is evolutionary chessecake')
Gould: Life Grandeur
Enjoy the hol.

jankaas Posted Jun 12, 2008
thanks both for the reading suggestions. will definitely get a couple of those....
as far as my removed posts go Bored, it was explained by psi by email that i was giving away the kind of info that would allow "others" to figure out who psi is.
trouble is that i reckon more people need to know about his alter ego aka "Le Noodleur" as he is head and shoulders above much that i've heard. his 4 piece ticks virtually all boxes, so i hope you've figured out a "drop". tracks 1, 4 and 5 just do it for me in spades....
my only question would be; just how amazing would these guys be if they were together for a few years writing/rehearsing/touring.....?
obviously i have no idea just how much time was spent together creating this, but i have a hunch that it is not a "band thing" in the conventional sense.
do correct me if i'm out of line psi, i'm fascinated by how different people choose to record their material.
wot no cartoons...?
Psiomniac Posted Jun 12, 2008
No, that is spot on jank. It was a two day recording session, I met two of the chaps for the first time on that first day. If it had been a free choice I would have toured it first and got it really 'played in' before recording. On the other hand, as most of this was done live in the studio with no edits, I think it has a spontaneous and fresh feel to it.
The other thing that I would have liked in different circumstances is some collaborative writing, which would have added something I think, as opposed to what actually happened which was that I wrote it all in advance.
Did I forget to recommend 'the Beano'?
wot no cartoons...?
Bx4 Posted Jun 12, 2008
Hi jank
Passing through.
Cartoons--If you want something unusual you might try any of Edward Gorey's Amphigorey collections especially first two.
psi: I have a drop set up but I thought I would wait until I am out of durance vile. Your recommendation is taken on board. Top guitarist and philosophic bloke, way too much.
Bit puzzled about why it would upset the dementors. I mean I worked out who you were from a certain album whose name I should perhaps not mention.
Must in the process of acquiring shiny new boxer.
If I don't get back on before your hol - enjoy.

and all that jazz
jankaas Posted Jun 12, 2008
wow, 2 days..... another testament to the talent on that recording.
the whole live thing as well makes sense, you can genuinely hear the room and the people grappling with their instruments. i do love it warts 'n all. too many recordings are generated in the context of "we'll just tidy that bit up, and add some more compression here, another overdub right there, a drop-in here....." and before you know it you end up with a sterile pile of nonsense.
the overall sound is gorgeous, very reminiscent of older recordings by the likes of Count Basie (The Gifted Ones) and Art Pepper (Winter Moon). but then comparisons are so very subjective.....
do let me know when you go to the Soft South, specifically Brighton where there still seems to be a flourishing jazz scene.

Probably a sensible precaution on the drop front.
I can imagine how you might have worked out that the album title referred to me but I doubt that many other people would have had the data to do that. It is probably wise not to mention it as you say though.
and all that jazz
Psiomniac Posted Jun 12, 2008
If I head your way I'll certainly let you know jank.
Apart from a small tour of the southwest and a jazz festival appearance a couple of years ago the quartet has been dormant which is a shame. At least two of those specific people have been touring with world famous acts since we did the album so although I'm thinking of reviving a quartet format the lineup and personnel will be different.

Morning psi
sensible: Indeed things seem a bit 'visor' down at the moment.
Worked out: I think you have read me a bit wrong it was jank's name I worked out. Arc from Drum to DIIC.
AFK: Mostly. Going to Edinburgh to acquire new boxer. I'll get round to 'cutting slack' when I come back.
