Boredbyfour,
I'm a bit rusty, but maybe we should have a game? Or perhaps it's the Ardbeg talking....

Bx4 Posted Oct 5, 2008
Evening psi:
A possibility though be warned I am (a)rusty (until recently hadn't really played for 40yrs. and (b) rubbish (went down to a Scholar's Mate recently!- and it wasn't the Lagavulin)
Ardbeg: The king of Islays though not, IMO, as good as before the mothballing**. At the moment, I prefer the 'Uigeadail' to the '10 Year Old'.
I seem to recall that Jank on his recent Paris(?) jaunt was given a malt, no idea which, and didn't like it
** The SO ponied up for a 1974 single cask bottling for my 'state pension' birthday. Unopened as yet.

Scholar's Mate? Ouch. Still, even GM's fall to a sucker punch occasionally.
I'm a fan of Lagavulin too, but I don't think I've had Uigeadail.
Well on the understanding that we are both a bit rubbish we could have a game here if you want. We could flip for colour.
Good night.

morning psi
A touch of insomnia.
Scholars mate: I am afraid the minister ( a presbyterian fundamentalist not a literalist) and I tend to mix malts and crack with chess.
I used, when young, to be quite interested but the somebody taught me Go and I got diverted.
Ok lets have few games.
A couple of practical points:
I am more familiar with the English descriptive notation never having used the algebraic one though I think the latter might be easier if you are familiar with it.
Second the Rev and I don't always finish games in one sitting in which case we leave board set up.
I am pretty sure I've got a portable set somewhere but it may take a couple of days to did it out.
Drawing lots: Don't see why we should bother. You start white first game.
Lagavulin: I like the heavily peated malts. One nice thing where we live is that when we sail back from the festival ( actually Crinan Canal basin basin we can do a malt run where we can hit every island (except Orkney) that does malt whiskies. and pick up supplies.
Uigeadail: Yes people don't seem to know it which is a bit odd since it can be found in Oddbins.
I ff you like the 10year old you ''ll love this. It a wee bit more like the pre-mothball Ardbegs
(we'll have to watch or jank can mock us for being cagoules.)

Ok, do you mind if we use algebraic as I am most familiar with that?
If it gets tiresome just let me know and I'll switch to English descriptive.

Hi psi
algebraic: Give it ago. I need to find a printable diagram copy of the coodinates. If I make an odd move I probably got it wrong.
What are conventions for variously en passant, promoted pawn , check, multiple check, checkmate and resign in algebraic.
e4: Havn't found spare board yet. Sucked into a doomed attempt to get 'Murder' back on some of ~Lennon,~healthy diet, ~save the planet schtick. Waste of time. I may do a hieru without the public falling on sword thing.
Mostly AFK tomorrow.

I use the FIDE endorsed short algebraic detailed here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Algebraic_chess_notation
I use + for check, ++ for checkmate and don't distinguish double check. Pawn promotion as the first example e1Q and en passant is clear but I'll put 'e.p.' to be absolutely sure. Resign would be 0-1 or 'white resigns' for me and 1-0 for you in this game, (or 'black resigns').

hi psi
Thanks
Fide endorsed: I feel faintly worried. You wouldn't have a 'ranking' perchance.
AFK for most of Day. I will attempt to locate ancient portable set tomorrow. (It may have algebraic coordinates printed on it.)
btw: As you seem to be atypically absent at the moment I did post an explanation of 'bovine CJ') on 'Murder'.

Fear not, I've never been good enough to play seriously.
I did once hold a county player to a 2-2 draw. Sadly, it turned out he represented the county of Rutland. I also held an IM to a draw once. The detail there was that he was playing 20 other guys at the same time! True, I was one of the two people who didn't lose but I think there was a luck element in that. They gave the cheque to the other guy who drew as he had apparently given the IM more trouble.

hi Bored and Psi,
Diskin; i have only ever felt comfortable in bands (as opposed to being the session player) where the writing credits are shared equally. any other split tends to lead to well....splitting up. so on some albums i've only managed to sneak in the odd track or so, yet on others have been the main songwriter. depends on the quality of the work at the end of the day....
Skutje sailing; as long as you type it wrong then you'll get very little, or rather too much of the "wrong" thing if you also leave of the 1st letter......but you've already been there. instead try Skutsje........
"real man in a barrel"; he is soooo funny yet doesn't know it. reminds me of "angry dad" edition of the Simpsons.
chess; seeing as my nephew slaughtered me when he was 10 i'll just get a comfy spot on the sofa. let the games begin!!

hi psi
Fear not: Another example of relativism I have never played a county champion even from the much smaller Clackmannanshire. The fact you lost a prize on a technicality is not persuasive evidence that you are rubbish.
Despite being in the 'bright' class at high school I didn't make the cut into the chess team so I'm genuinely rubbish.
My only famous victory was against the school RE teacher (a converso who had a vision of Jesus!)who said he would love to play against a defensive position I had worked up. He did and lost. 0-1
It strikes me that rather than fill this 'conversation' with chess moves we should start a dedicated one.
Portable chess set:The search continues. I think it's in the loft and I think I know where.

Diskin. Was this the only Drum album you were on?
Mean to ask . Thought you had another Italian gig lined up this year?
Barrel man: He seems to have gone quiet. Not sure if a career as a troll is indicated when you get so upset by counter-trolling.
skutje/skutsje: A bit confused you get hits on both:
http://www.skutsjesilen.nl/
But I found this site
http://www.bowcrest.com/Recreational%20Barges%20(A-L).htm
which has skutje, skutsje and tjalk.
chess: we may be on the same level. The PMG took me down. Perhaps we should play and gt psi to mentor us?

Hi Bx4,
Well I can't endorse this bid of yours to paint yourself as the underdog. Firstly RE teachers can be tough chess players, secondly you admit to having worked on a defense which means you took it more seriously than most casual players. And I didn't say he was a champ, just a player and he played for Rutland! And the IM was playing 20 other guys at the same time. I didn't even try out for our chess team at school. No I would guess we are about the same. The good thing is, we have an opportunity to find out.
A separate thread might be good. You could start one with your first move.

(1)I am the underdog
(2) RE teacher was almost certainly mad - Jesus appeared at the bottom of his bed.
(3) One good defense does not an overdog make.
(4) It was a modernist one I got out of Soviet Weekly.
(5) He was a traditionalist
(6) I bet you have played with them clock things.
(7) Competitive chess like rugby and cricket was a requirement if you were a 'bright. No choice involved.
(A slightly earlier variant of the infamous 'hothouse' education experiment inflicted on Skippy the PM.)
(8) I can't endorse this attempt to paint yourself as just another joe.
(9) Yes I'll start a new 'conversation' . Tomorrow the loft
Just had a strange experience. Came across some old pictures on the web of the town I grew up.
One showed where, age 10 and 3/4, I finally concluded 'Gods - probably not'

hi Bored,
The Drum; yup, the Diskin album is the only album i recorded with them. there are some live B-sides with their 2nd album (Self Made Maniac) single releases. if you have a surf on Lastfm (where they categorise China Drum under "scottish"?!)you'll find what they sounded like without me, quite a bit like Greenday imo. so i had joined them during the time they were releasing their 2nd album, but it was initially just to fill the drum seat vacated by the singing/drummer going out front. then i started my master plan of subverting the lot of them with an idealistic dream of creating a "glorious failure".......that became Diskin.
italy; we are hoping to play next summer in Palestrina again at the Nel Nome Del Rock festival. perhaps you could include in your next Boxer outing? it's 1st week of July. Palestrina is apparently the site of a pre-Roman temple, much of its traditions etc eventually absorbed into the church. you'd love it.....

Hi both,
must say i'm loving the "no, I AM really rubbish...." to and thro'ing.
i reckon you are likely going to have a nice game, without a clear favourite at this point. both your checkered (sorry) histories are equally amusing.

1) No, you're not the underdog.
2) Your RE teacher might well have been mad but then again, so was Bobby Fischer.
3) One good defense is more than I have achieved, I tend to make it up as I go along. Perhaps I'm an inveterate improvisor.
4) I look forward to your move. I have played with clock thingies but only socially in order to facilitate blitz games.
yours,
Joe Schmoe

hi jank:
The Drum: Was the thereafter demise associated with the glorious failure?
Nel Nome Del 2009: Unfortunately current plans are for a circumbaltic Pirsig run around then but keep me posted.....
Of tjalks: According to the Dutch 'crew' the tjalk is a hull design and you get barge tjalks and sailing tjalks.
A suggestion that skuts and skutsje might be specifically Fryslaner.
She's an Amsterdammer through and through so I give this no great weight.
She did however send me a impressive picture of a sailing tjalk gullwinging.
btw did you know that that one of your heroes, Steve Jones, has announced the end of human evolution

hi jank
The chainsawing is over. I am not enamoured by the howking out of stumps and roots. There are mechanised root loppers
loving it: Me too.
Checkered: I must confess I had not associated psi with Rutlandshire.
I only discovered that Gordon Brown was a near contemporary alumni of KHS when I came across this:
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article1811255.ece
The article is mostly 'nonsense upon stilts'.
nice game: It was not me who started the rubbish thing. I have a suspiscion that psi is a much more frequent flyer, chess-wise, than I am
There appear to be multiple 'Noah's Flood' boards.
On one I am being chided by a 'grammar Adrian' for English usage. 'Less than' instead of 'fewer'
I think I'll play the 'I am not English card'

Despite chainsawing interlude loft turned over and portable se food more decrepit than anticipated
Sadly no engraved alglebraic co-ordinates. Ah well!
1. You would say that would you.
2. Fischer was merely very, very eccentric.
3. I don't think he ever claimed that Capablanca regularly manifested at the foot of his bed
4. You prove my point-I had to look 'blitz' up.
Yours
