I'm just popping in as one of the <./>ACEs</.> here...allow me to commend you on posting such a concise introduction. After doing years of "face to face" PR, it's comforting knowing a bit (actually quite a bit in this case) about who you're dealing with. I've got a few things here in RL or real life that require attention just now, but I'll be getting back to you soon with some tips for manouevering about the site, etc. Adios!*waves*

First of all (at least here) let me just say I share in part, your love of- ah, a favorite on the stereo just now, Harlem Nocturne. But, *sigh* on to my ACEing duties, eh...
Since you are quite new, you should check out the 'I am new, what should I do now?' page@ A868098 . Of course there's the 'Welcome page' to check out as well, that's@ A53146 . And it might not hurt to hop a passing ...any really, to take the <./>dontpanictour</.> .
The bus there is just 1 of the many many smileys here, you'll find the complete categorized list@ A155909 . It gives very simple instructions for using/creating each 1 & is always there to refer back to...in fact I believe you can even print it out. You might want to <./>askh2g2</.> , that poses a question to the h2g2 community at large...so you're assured of getting an interesting array of responses.
I've used a number of the smileys on my page - click on my underlined nickname to have a look. You can also look at 'spicing up your page' ( A690518 ). Depending largely on your computer expertise, a couple other options are the 'picture galley'@ A692741 & 'the GuideML clinic'@ A187229 .
Like most sizeable communities h2g2 or hootoo as it's also known, has numerous Clubs & Societies. A complete, & again categorized list can be found@ A660340 . Sort through those, select some appropriate ones & you're sure to meet a variety of like-minded folks. Hootoo also has its own newspaper <./>thepost</.> which comes out every Thursday evening U.K. time. Oh, being on this side of "the pond"-I'm in western Canada, something that might help with regard to various time zones is http://www.worldtimeserver.com . But back to the post, there's usually some good reading there & it'll give you some idea of the goings-on (& who's going, so to speak) here. A personal note, a friend of mine Smudger U210712 -in Scotland, writes an interesting column of various recollections called 'Smudger Snippets'(the archives are@ A1134848 ).
Some of my ACE colleagues have compiled lists of links designed to assist new researchers such as yourself. You'll find; Shea's List@ A534953 , Seraphina's Links@ A1919937 , Rocketman's Links@ A725500 & Feisor's List Of Links@ A719840 . Feisor wisely suggests getting out & meeting people, I don't think you should have any problems there.
Take some time going over all those links & having a good look around. Feel free to use the 'Reply' button below to get ahold of me for any reason. I'm sure you'll find no shortage of folk eager to communicate. Bye for now & I'm sure I'll see you around (so to speak) at some point! *waves*
