Starting Uni

Sarah started University yesterday - Birmingham, Classics. Big day and I was very impressed with the way freshers, mostly pretty nervous, were being looked after.
I also like how international Birmingham University is. Students coming in from all over.

Air Law

Going solo means studying Air Law. Now that is not my bag.

Going solo

Now going solo is quite a big deal. If it was my first time it would be a very big deal. Out gets your flying instructor, who has been babysitting you for the last 20 odd hours in the air, and suddenly you're all alone taking off towards the cloudy, in my case stormy sky. And when you've made it round the circuit and landed safely for the first time all by yourself you feel you've conquered the world.

There'll be hours and hours of flying to come when the reality of how much there is to learn will dawn, but for now (even though I did it first 30 years back) I feel as free as a baby bird that has just flown the nest.

Booklist

I'm thinking of putting up a booklist. Right now I'm reading Death of a Postman by my Dad. I always try and keep one of the 620 books he wrote on the go. And Francis Chichester's Lonely Sea and the Sky which shows that I'm at the very early (and cautious) stage of planning my next major journey. The last one - driving from London to New York via Siberia - took two years to get off the ground.

Flying

Another great day up there in the open blue skies, well not quite I was practicing emergency landings, but the sky was so good, and the wind, and the sun and just being there.
