Fun Stuff.Feb. 27th 05

Friday was The Son's 40th birthday and our godson's wedding day. The Son came around first thing for a birthday and we went off to the wedding having arranged to met the family for dinner that night in Penzance.
My godson is a chap who makes loadsa money just moving cash around from place to place; so the wedding was expected to be quite sumptious. Luckily when we went to get our cornish kilts earlier this week, the hire people did not have enough gear for all of us to have them so it was decided none of us would wear them so it was morning suits and top hats I looked a pillock..
The groom and his bride have lived together for years, and among the bridesmaids flower girls and page boys were their two children.
it was a freezing cold day so after the long and rather uninspiring muddled service(think Rowan Atkinson in 'Four Weddings...' it was decided the pictures would be taken in the church. That took an hour
Then to Treggena Castle for the reception. First were served little dead things on toast as appetisers. Tray after silver tray dragged out of the kitchen by a surly waiter who looked as though he had just jumped out of the back of a lorry. A string quartet played incomprehensible music in the background, booze flowed conversation seemed to be restricted to women saying 'What does she look like in that' She, being any woman who walked by not being in that particular group. We eventually sat down to eat at 5.15 having been at the church at noon. We then had to ring our son and tell him we would not be able to make dinner with him and the children, because when we said we would have to leave before the wedding meal the groom's mum started to and as we have been friends for nearly 50 years we thought it best to stay. The meal was splendid. We all had gifts at our place settings. The chaps had a small bottle of whisky, the women a box of Belgian chocs and we all had an envelope with a lottery ticket in it. We did not win anything
There were slightly more flowers in the room than you would find at Chelsea Flower Show, and slightly more over dressed women than at Ascot. The meal and speeches went on for nearly three hours and The Boss and I felt unable to stay for the jigging about to a ten piece VERY LOUD band so we left just after eight.
However last night was The Son's 40th birthday party at the golf club and loads of the people from the wedding came to the village for the birthday bash. Nearly three hundred of us crowded into the golf club, we took over both bars and the reception area. We had photos of The Son from babyhood to manhood around the walls. And a huge head and shoulders framed picture in the foyer. The village pubs were emptied of their hardiest drinkers and we had a band in one room, a disco in another and I even got up and did a bit of rock in spite of my back. We met people we had not seen for years. The Boss was in the local school for lots of years and when our boys were young we ran a youth club, some of the boys and girls travelled back for The Son's party. he contacted most of them over the internet and although I only recognised a few of them they all seemed to recognise us and said we hadn't changed over the years.
We managed to stay there until after midnight, when we left there were a few potential hangovers reeling about the place but I am happy to say that The Son bowled up this morning as fitas can be so he did not over indulge. I knew that scores of people had put drinks behind the bar for him so wondered why he had remained so together. Apparently he had told the bar staff to take the money for a drink for him if offered but not to give nim the drink. At the end of the evening there was a considerable amount of cash there and it was donated to a local charity for Downs syndrome children which I thought rather kind of him.
We have had a really good two days, The Boss looked stunning in her wedding gear and I felt good to be with her even though I was dressed like a dog's dinner. Tomorrow we are going to stay in bed most of the day to recover!!!

More stuff

Things seem to be calming down at last. The Boss has had a hard time with 'The Bug' but is now getting better, but still coughing a bit. The new carpets look really good. The smell of paint has goneand all the stuff we packed into boxes is now back on the shelves, when we packed the stuff up we decided that we would put some of the boxes into the loft some would go to a charity shop and a few things would come back out. It all came back out, every thing had a memory for us, nothing is without meaning, so the house still looks like a second hand junk shop(but with very smart carpet).
I have been soooo busy. Apart from the Open university work which gets heavier by the week, I am now involved trying to set up an amateur boxing club for the boys and girls of the area. The Son asked me to help get it funded so I spend loads of time e mailing organisations, and phoning people to get sponsorship. There are loads of forms to fill out and masses of rules and regs to take on board but it keeps me out of mischief.
The E.G.D. has a big role in kidz summer show. The Y.D.G.is in 'Oliver' here in the village.
And The Son and I feel a bit guilty because we decided not to do 'Dad's Army' and the theatre is still a couple of guys short.
The inquest on my friend decided that it was suicide caused by the Huntingtons. The widow was seen leaving the inquest crying!!!
It has been a miserable week weather wise until today but today has been beautiful. I walked around the gardens this morning. my camelias are in full bloom. daffodils, crocus primroses and the hebes are all out. Lovely
I went to Penzance this afternoon. The place was packed. Loads of visitors, some even walking around in shorts,.
The papers are full of Charlie Windsor and his tart, when there is so much important stuff going on in the world I don't understand why this should be front page news. Have we all forgotten what is happening in the third world? or do we just not care enough to make it headline news?

Bad stuff

We have had a bit of a weird time lately. Both the Boss and I picked up some bug from the children when we had them here. The Son then fell ill and the Doc thought it a good idea to give him penicillin. he took one tablet and went into anaphylactic shock. We were called around to his house and found him with swollen face and unable to breathe. Doctor arrived and gave him andrenilin injections, and put him into an oxygen mask. Paramedics then arrived and carted him off to H.D.U.at the hospital. We stayed with the children while daughter in law went to hospital. Thankfuly his treatment was swift and effective and he is now recovering. While all this was going on our house was upside down waiting for a guy to come and fit three carpets. He arrived, not with three carpets but with one huge one which he could not get through the door so he had to lay it out in the road to cut to size. We had the house painted so as well as feeling unwell we had an hysterical carpet layer, the worry about The Son and the stink of paint to put up with.
But we are O.K. now.

family crisis
Posted Jan 25, 2005
After a week of horrible foggy wet weather Sunday dawned bright and sunny so after lunch we decided to go for a drive up the North coast, stop and have a little sit well wrapped up to make sure the sea was behaving, which it was, just lying around looking blue and beautiful. Across country to Helston, a quick look at Loo Bar then through Porthleven, along the coast road to Marazion out through Newlyn and home. Lovely, a nice quiet day before starting this weeks work. The carpets are coming next Monday so we have been boxing things up and generally getting things ready for the painter coming Thursday to paint before the carpets go down. All quite straight forward except.... Yesterday 'phone goes early in the morning. Can we have Y.G.Sfor the day he is poorly. Of course we could but it meant no work being done until mother colected him after school. This morning, early 'phone call, can we have YGS AND YGD, yes we can but it means getting even less preparatory work done. This afternoon 'phone goes again. it is the school they are sending EGD home to us as she is poorly. We now have three coughing spluttering snotty children and a floor covered with dirty tissues
The Son's wife is not happy because The Son has to go to Spain on business next month. The son is not happy because she is not happy. We are not very happy because we have to feed the kids, clear up their tissues, and can't get on with out work.
We quite expect the EGS to go down with the bug tomorrow and we will be asked to have him. We can't take them out to entertain them and although so far they have been very quiet we still wish they were not here this week Much as we them we prefer to see them when they are able to go out to play!!

Kif's family stuff
Posted Jan 18, 2005
I probably have a rather obsessive attitude to family records and I am so pleased that my journal yesterday gave some others a little nudge in the direction of keeping more technological records.
Until I was fifteen I believed my mother was dead, I lived with foster parents and my father visited occasionaly (Probably to make sure I was still alive and he had to keep paying my keep).
Purely by chance I discovered my mother was alive and by a lot of hard footwork I eventually found her. By foot work I mean by knocking on doors and asking questions night after night after school. I had only the slightest of clues to work on and I did it alone and with no help as I told neither my father nor my foster parents what I was doing.
Not only did I find my mother but I found an older sister, and also that my surname was not my name at all. I still use the name my father chose for us, but I know who I really am and where my family roots are, which is important to me. As a child I never really felt I 'Belonged' anywhere.
My father had taken my brother and me away from both sides of the family changed his name and ours. Over the years I have found myself to be a member of a huge tribe of aunts uncles and cousins on both sides. With the help of the internet I have discovered family going back to the 1700s. my last discovery was a cousin in France last year who came with her husband and daughter to see us last summer. I had not seen a picture of her but I knew her as soon as she arrived because she looked like my father.
I was determined that my grand children would have no doubts about who they are and the family archive of writings photos film and tape will ensure that they will be able to pass on to their children(if they want to)the family history..
