Well, our big evening at the park turned out to be a bust. First of all, it was the New York Philharmonic, not the Long Island Philharmonic, and as we were sitting through The Flying Dutchman Overture, the fog started rolling in off the Great South Bay. They only got through the first movement of Lalo's Symphonie espagnole for Violin and Orchestra when they had to stop because of the moisture. They moved the orchestra upstage, but the instruments were still getting too damp, so they fast forwarded to the finale of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, and told us they'd just go straight to the fireworks. But the fog was so thick at that point that we couldn't even see them! We just got to hear loud bangs and watch the fog change color.

Lady Scott Posted Jul 19, 2005
We were given "Special VIP Passes" to view the Lancaster city 4th of July fireworks from the roof of a parking garage.
We were under the impression that only pass-holders would be allowed on the roof, and that there would be something special about it.
Not so... we got up there, there was no one checking passes, the place was positively polluted with everyone and their mother.
That was ok, we just felt like dorks walking around with our *bright pink* passes hanging around our necks when most people didn't have passes.
So anyhow, the fireworks started about an hour late (as usual), and we noticed that there was a little extra noise... which turned out to be thunder.
About 2 minutes into the show, it started to pour down rain, and guess who didn't have umbrella (not that it's a good idea to stand on a tall building holding a metal rod during a thunderstorm )
To make a long story short, Amy+ and I headed back to the car in the pouring down rain, catching a glimpse of the fireworks occasionally along the way, while Shorty and Lord Scott stayed on a lower level of the parking garage to watch the rest of the show.

I stayed home and watched the Esplanade concert on my TV. What blew my mind was the first performer, who turned out to be a woman I went to college with, who is now a school principal in Whitman, Mass. She did really well, and I am so proud of her!

Dearest Shea,
What a lovely account. !
What a lovely conccert!
and how positively the conductor/orchestra managed the vagaries of Mother Nature.
It must have been an eerie feeling listening to all that beautiful music with the fog swirling gently in.
Beautiful.
Debussy could not have managed it better - or even Wagner!!
We shall have to go to a concert together when we come to New York.
Much affection
Christiane

AR1, TJ and I were just saying that we should do things like that concert more often, and that we should go to Lincoln Center and the Met. I've lived so close to NYC all my life, but there's so much I haven't done!

My dear Shea and TJ,
Just a little note to tell you that I often think of you both.
and that I have found the website of the QE2, and there is a trip which goes across the pond and then spends a couple of days in New York.
If they do the same trip next year then

And - big secret - I might have.

Concerts in the rain.... reminds me of my days working in the Israel Festival during the summer, selling food to get into shows for free. And some of them were just amazing, like the Stomp, or a group of Japanese Drummers, Porgy and Bess and so on....

Don Malvado, so bitter my cat won't even lick me Posted Aug 17, 2005
There was a massive firework display in Plymouth last night and again tonight!
Every year 4 or 5 firework companies compete to produce the best firework display!
I was increadable! I heard last year they let of half a million quid of firework!
