To gird (n) 1. To surround, encircle with a girdle. 2. To prepare (oneself) for action. 3. To invest or endue with attributes. 4. To equip with a sword suspended from a girdle or belt.

So girding up your loins may well mean putting on a protective codpiece or even a cricket box
