I loved the film personaly, I tresure my offical towel with logo (being sold on ebay as well as some set pices by Digital Outlook for charity)
Now I can't wait for the DVD and all the stuf they must have cut out. like 'I write poetry to throw my mean calous exteria into sharp relife' which I did miss.
But the film itself has things that arn't in the books and has some good threads (what are called unresolved in the bad review) but I call the typical Douglas next story markers.

"Typical Douglas next story markers"
How many books did it take him before he explained the bowl of petunias and 'Oh no, not again'?
I wonder if he actually knew where he was going with the story when he was writing it?

My gues is not, although that part is in the film, and it even bangs into the window giving a much better impressing that he saw aurther.

Just been over to Planet Magrathea and surfed around.
What a sad, pathetic man. This is one of the best (or worst?) cases of sour grapes I've seen in a long time. It's such a shame that he can't get his head out of his backside; for a guy who is in such an unrivalled position when it comes to all things DNA, the man really needs to get out more. Rich coming from me, I know!

Oh come on, you're being a bit harsh on him. As the BBC's article about the expectations some people have of the film, "The film is, for many fans, the culmination of a long love affair that began in the late 70s. It is no wonder then that expectations have been huge and some have been disappointed."
I personally feel quite sorry for him, and I don't believe he deserves anything like the bad-mouthing that he is receiving.
But then again, it's got little to do with me. I don't think that the books and TV series were that good, and I got over that fact more than 20 years ago now.

Jeebers. Anyone else would have rised above it, shrugged it off and maybe joked along with it. Throwing in the towel (pardon the pun) was probably the worst thing he could do at this time.
"...as of now I will never write another word, in print or on-line, about Douglas Adams or The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy."
I wonder if that means he's going to phone the publisher of his MetaGuide and tell them to shelve it, as that is/was(?) supposedly due out next month.

I totally respect MJ's views on the film and am keeping an open mind (although admittedly out of the numerous reviews I've read he's been the only one not to like the film), but I really think he's just spitting the dummy. I get the impression the kitchen's too hot for him; if that were me, I'd be even more determined to stay right were I was and defend my corner.
Maybe there's more behind it and I'm intruiged about the mention of the friction between him and DNA's estate, but as someone on his guestbook has mentioned (I'm surprised it's still there, actually ) he does come across as if he's unhappy that he wasn't asked to be involved *shrug*

He had already decided to stop after May 6th because he's tired of HHGG and wants to do new things. The abuse he was having to put up with just hastened the decision to stop, as far as I can see.

Hello,
I come this way via the Yahoo Cerebus News Group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cerebus/
As much as I'd like to NOT believe M. J. Simpson's review and believe YOUR review, I have one problem with Hitchhiker's movie:
NO TOWELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As you yourself say:"For example, rather than spending two minutes of screen time on a guide entry about towels (which wasn't even in the first radio series) they actually have Ford using his towel to solve problems. This shows that the filmmakers do 'get it' and on a much deeper level than we have any right to expect.
Now, I understand that Douglas Adams was upset by the story of a dying woman who was comforted by the fact that she had her towel with her, and therefore believed that she would be all right after she died, because: She "really knew where her towel was".
BUT, for me, the guide entry on towels is important to the story. OK, so we see Ford using a towel. But if there is no explanation for WHY he is using a towel, then what's the point.
How will (as an example,) my girlfriend (who's never read the Guide) know why a towel is important.
If Douglas cut out the guide entry on towels in versions of the script, that doesn't mean it was a good idea.
The towel entry is important to know the psychology of the story. Plus it's really funny.
My thoughts are that anybody who makes a Hitchhiker's movie and cuts out the entry on towels, doesn't "get it".
And conseqently, won't be getting my eight dollars.
Matt Dow
(and don't EVEN get me started on the Mr. Prosser scene getting cut down...)

Well my feeling is that anyone who thinks that labouring a point in a movie (a primarily visual experience) by spending two minutes on verbal exposition underlining something which is played out throughout the movie doesn't get it either. It's necessary in a radio series, because words are all you've got, but a movie can do it better.
And you should remember that the thing about Towels only actually appeared in the second radio series, so to say it was a fundamental part of Hitchhiker's is stretching a point. The first series went by without a single mention.
"How will (as an example,) my girlfriend (who's never read the Guide) know why a towel is important."
Maybe by watching the movie and inferring from the myriad uses to which the towel is put? Or is thinking about stuff suddenly unwelcome in a Hitchhiker's movie?

Jim, your very right the entry on towels wasn't important in the film, I got it when fords almost obsesive nature towards his towel, the fact that it's mentioned many time throught the film.
no, the film does get it.

"I personally feel quite sorry for him, and I don't believe he deserves anything like the bad-mouthing that he is receiving."
Actually, I feel a little sorry for him too...
Not a lot though...
Let's face it - he's supposedly a professional journalist, he should know who his audience is and what their reaction is going to be to what he writes... What did he expect would happen?
Although there is the other alternative... That he just wanted to make a grand exit and not just shut down his website and disappear...
Wonder what he'll do if there's a sequel to the film
