We've just seen the film and....loved it!
My main gripe is that the film seemed a bit rushed until about a quarter of the way through when it settled down, but I didn't mind the omissions people have been getting up in arms about. The towel thing was done well in my opinion and I really liked Deep Thought; I didn't mind the cartoon bit at all
I think that it's a difficult one - while trying to keep the spirit of Hitchhiker, which they did excellently, the film has to appeal to a global audience and especially people who've never heard/seen/read Hitchhiker before so allowances do have to be made.
Jim - I didn't realise you were in the credits at the end too?
Thanks Jim

I loved it! I saw it today and I loved it! It rocked! And no, this review is not a critical or detailed one!
Enough exclamation marks now.

I haven't had the chance to read Simpson's review (his site is down at the moment) but I heard about his complaints. So I went in to the theater with extremely low expectations.
Frankly, I was astounded at how much of the book they kept in the movie; the dialog, the scenes, everything. I thought the love triangle fit right into Adams' universe, while the Humma subplot left something to be desired. I assumed the love story was Adams' idea, and Humma was Kirkpatrick's. (Apparently I was wrong about that!) I agree that the slapstick got a little out of control at times. The opening big band number started me off cold, but when "Journey of the Sorcerer" kicked in shortly afterwards, I was bouncing in my seat and applauded. (I'm getting goosebumps just remembering it!)
Magrathea was flawless, the vogons were awesome, and the casting and acting were great. There was little character development, so when the love triangle reached its turning point (via the POV gun) it was a little jarring for me. I loved where they set the scene with the mice; it brought the movie full-circle for me.
My biggest complaint is that I would have preferred to see Zaphod's second head on his shoulders, alongside his first head. I don't know why they stacked his heads on top of each other.
That's it. My biggest complaint was a relatively minor detail. I suppose that's saying a lot.

His site's down but you can still access it. He's just not updating it any more.
The opening titles with Journey...were fantastic, weren't they?

Um, that wasn't the opening titles, though. It was just the Book.

A friend of mine just told me he didn't like it.
I'm not upset... He liked Dumb and Dumber.
