Midnight Ice - the Daughter of a Cacophony of Chrysanthemums

You DO have an accent! If you came over here, you'd notice it. If I went over there, you'd notice mine. In actual fact, many Aussies have said to me that my accent isn't really very Australian, but has a hint of English in it, which is strange because I've never been to England and none of my family are English...
But everybody in other countries would say it was Australian - it's only if you have the accent yourself, or are used to hearing it that you pick up the difference...
Accents are weird.

Really? Do you get the Aussie soapies on American TV? I can't stand them... I can't stand soapies of any kind. Especially "Home & Away" and "Neighbours". I love sitcoms though... "My Wife and Kids", "8 Simple Rules" and that legendary show, "The Simpsons". Australia is inundated with American TV.smiley - biggrin

Uh, I don't know. I think I know quite a lot about Americans - half of our TV programs are American (the other half originate from the UK). I know TV isn't excatly the best gauge of what a country is like, but the thing I'd most like to know about America is about the schools. Does everybody have "groups" they hang around with, or are people generally accepting? I know in Australia there are mainly two groups - the "bitches", who are the fashion obsessed ones, who enjoy backstabbing other people, and then "everyone else". I'm lucky, because at my school everybody is generally nice to each other, even the people who I'm sure at some stage could have fitted the "bitch mould". We do have goths and jocks and nerds and musos and all that, but friendship groups tend to be a mixture. What's it like in America?

we dont have "bitches" we get preps... they arnt necesarily mean but they dont like anyone else... then theres the "cool" ppl... they dress cool and act cool.... then there are the "black/mexican"... not to be racist.... but theyre the "gangsta" people... the nerdly unpopular people... and then there is the average kids... like me... im unusual average, but theres also nerdy average, and popular average... too many groups.... we normally have groups of friends but we accept people... if their nice

Oh, ok...
I think my school, being so multicultural, doesn't really have many racial barriers.
All kinds of people, no matter what their race just hang out together and do whatever. Most of my friends here aren't even Australian... I share a room with some Indonesians and a Korean, and they're really cool people.
Half my class weren't even born in this country, but we don't really care about where people come from, or what they look like - we all just try to get along, I think. There are always a few exceptions, but I'm hoping I'm not one of them.
If I was in America, I think I would be one of the "average" people, but I think here, I have a foot in with just about every group - the nerds, the brains, the weird people, the funny people, the goths... whatever you want to classify these people as being...smiley - biggrin

I think our school is 49% Asian, 40% white (no matter what background, Greek, European of any other sort, Aussies, Americans all come under that heading) and 11% African or Middle Eastern.
At my old school, though, everyone was Aussie, except for about two people. I like the multiculturalism here.

Yeah, well you'd be able to, but some others wouldn't. It's an all-girls school, I don't know if I mentioned that.
Is it OK if I ask what race you are? Just curious, is all. I'm nothing interesting - white Australian. And yeah, we do have to wear uniforms, but they aren't too bad. Only wear ties in winter, but we can't wear pants at all, except for PE. We wear stockings in winter and knee-high white socks in summer.
But I'm used to school uniform, I've been wearing it ever since I started school (not this particular uniform, but a uniform nonetheless). I'm guessing in America there is no school uniform, right?
Or at least not for public schools? I don't know...

Cool! Iranian. Yeah, I'd say American is a race (sorta...)
If Australian is, then American definitely is.
My background's kinda boring. Mum and Dad were both born here, so were my grandparents, and then I think one of my great-grandparents was Greek and one was Irish, and it's mainly Irish if you go back far enough.

Your school does sound cool. At my school, we have different groups too. Only every one is artsy. We have preps, punks, anime junkies, and goths. But they hang out with every one. We are manly seperated by our aret area, but that doesn't mean we ONLY hang out with them. Thats just how we're identified. I go to an Arts school. After a while though you start to get annoyed with one another. The vocal kids always humming or singing or tapping their feet. And the Music majors always, banging beats out on the tables. The theater majors always talking so load, and over reacting about every little thing. The dance majors, always so gracful poised and stuck up. The visual majors, alway drawing on their hands or skatching on the desks. And of cours, the communications major (thats me) Always complaining about the latest films and their lack of "Artistic balance and continuity" and reciting poems and writing books. Every one excepts one another. they don't disclude you because Your "different" that actually makes you cool at my school.... well thats not entirly true... but it sounds nice.smiley - biggrin

I'm gonna be leaving my school next year. I'm gonna try and audition for another arts school.... but who knows. Every one says it's so hard to switch shools, when your used to may schools. You get picked on in other places for be artsy. I just can't imagine that being true though.smiley - erm
