It's weird - here we call English football soccer, American football rugby and Australian Rules Football football. Or footy. So if you talk about football here, you're talking about the AFL.

In AFL the ball hardly ever comes into prolonged contact with the hands - they bounce it (which isn't easy because the ball is a tapered oval shape) and they kick it all the time to each other. They also hand-pass it or kick it to other players on the field. I think if you ran with the ball under your arm like you do in American football you would get disqualified. There's no padding in AFL either - the players wear long socks in their team colours, short shorts and a their team shirt (sort of like a vest thing) with their player number on the back.
