Most of the good'ns did. There was a time when painters were ten a penny - it's only hindsight & inadvertant retrospective marketing/hype that makes us aware of some painters over others and wonder why they died in poverty.
I just thought of that and might be completely wrong.

Rembrandt became rich and bought a lot of art, but he was overspendins his money and living in sin with your housekeeper in a Christian world that requested his paintings was not realy good.

your housekeeper > his housekeeper

Rembrandt used to be relatively wealthy, really, but due to mismanagement and I can't remember what else ( I think his son died at an early age), Rembrandt lost all his money.

The pictures are well worth it, but best to have some sort of guide with you, which tells you something about the background

I can't be doing with guides - they take you to what they want to take you to. I'd much rather mooch about and look at whatever takes my fancy.
Besides, if I want more info I go here:
http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/
And the cards by the paintings have quite a lot of info.

Did you know that they cut off the sides of Night Watch? And that they didn't want to pay for it because it was such a bad portrait?

Knew about the chopping, but not the paying. Crivvens.

yea, because some people can't be seen clearly. They didn't want to pay - the ones who can't be seen, I mean.

What's all that about living in sin with someones housekeeper? I thought he was having it off with that other bloke. One of them lopped his ear off when in whinge mode; that is seriously unwise & totally ruins stereo sound IMHO.
I had one of his piccies behind the cooker, but it got so spattered with curry the sunflowers looked like dahlias, so i took it down & it is waiting to be chopped up & used in one of my own art thingys.

Rembrandt (living in sin / lived about 400 years ago) and van Gogh (cut his ear off / lived about 200 years ago) are 2 different Dutch people!

That's no excuse. Lots of relationships have an age gap.
Both Dutch, both artists. I bet there is a lot of this sort of thing going on in garrets in Holland.
