One year down...

Much to my suprise I've completed the first year of my degree course smiley - geek. I didn't think I'd make it, going back to education after this length of time away and surrounded by young geeky types on a computing course (apologies to any geeky types present).

The first semester seemed OK, just getting back into the swing of education and the regime of "learn and revise". Was dead chuffed when the first semester results came through and found I'd done really well, though sailed a bit close to the wind with the Web Techniques module almost needing a resit to understand HTML. If it hadn't been for the Study Support team, the Quantatative Methods (that's a fancy name for maths) would have got the better of me.

Second semester was a bit tougher but somehow better - maybe I was getting used to this studying lark. This was my first introduction to any programming languages, we're learning Java with this cute little package called BlueJ. I think I'll be spending parts of the Summer revising the programming module, somehow I don't think next year is going to be such easy going.

Starting University

I've been accepted on a Computing & Information degree course, so am swatting up on all the stuff I'll need to know before I start properly in a couple of weeks time. Stuff like maths, differentiation, squares, quadratic equations, formulae and powers (*not* calculus, thank goodness). smiley - headhurts After this comes the more complex topics like understanding data mining, validation and basic programming. I've got support all round, from the Uni staff and my other half who's worked with IT and systems for years.

All of this means that I'll not be online so much smiley - sadface, just popping in to read and keep up with folks, so will miss out on many of the interesting entries and conversations that go on.

Results!

Six months after leaving my HND course when I moved, the awarding body have finally got around to sending my performance notification with the grades I achieved. Merits and distinctions all round so finally the evidence to progress to another level. All I have to do now is work out what I want to study..

New country

Following trouble at my old work place, my other half resigned his job and got a new one in Aberdeen; thus we've moved to the north with it's great scenery and changable weather. I've settled in well and now we've got our LAN set up I can pop onto H2G2 again without worrying about my boss sneaking over my shoulder when I ought to be working. I can look out of my home office window across the coast and to the local lighthouse, really calming watching it when I'm trying to be inspired over work.

Having heard from friends still at the Birmingham place, it seems we did well to get out - the place is being run by politics not good business practice.

Studying

One of the joys of working at a College is that you get to take advantage of the courses they run. I've just taken them up on the offer and am doing my HND in Business & Management.

First semester was OK, just two units, European Business, Business Strategy.

Second semester and it's started getting more difficult. Human Resources, Small Business Management, Management Accounts, Management Information Systems. Aghhh. Assignments are being handed out left, right and centre and deadlines seem to be very tight for completion. At least I'm in with a good class all looking out for each other.

Let's see how it goes..
