Whether or not the new starts are in reply to the old or in line with the original topic, the download time and bandwidth usage will be the same, based on how much is here.
Personally I prefer the new start to be in the same post as the last line, thus causing the cascade.

Not so, I think. The dots on the left are made up with graphics, and the same graphic file is used each time you get a particular shape ort level of indent. Hence when you have bery long cascades they het slower and slower as the images get longer and longer, and a new image needs to be downloaded each time.
When you go back to the beginning your browser re-uses the cached images from last time, with no download time.
That's how it should happen, and my timings indicate that's how it does
