Online Community
Hello. I've been active posting here and there for weeks now, but I never put anything on my home page. I suppose this is because I feel, as did the Vogons, that insistence is useless and anything I say will simply be contradicted by someone else. But that's great! I love it! Bring on the disorder!
Which brings me to my point. I am extremely interested in the nature of online community and how it works. This has been one of my only experiences with it, but I know that it's an ancient tradition (indeed, the basis of the net, ARPAnet, was designed as a community facilitation tool, in the most bare-bones sense of the word community). MOOs, MUDs, the Well, BBSs, email, chat rooms, and now its highest form of evolution, h2g2. So, here are your discussion topics, children:
What I did on my summer vacation
How I would organize an online community, if I had the resources
Is the web the right medium for online community? Why/not?
Should online communities be governed? How?
Is there any hope for e-commerce on online community? How would you design it if it were up to you?
Is there any way to attract users to a given community (bulletin board, mailing list, what have you) if attendence/activity drops? Should the community be allowed to "die"?
Is Howard Rheingold the bomb or what? If not, who is? ; )
Why will the complexity of existence make it inevitable that our species be replaced by something else? By what?
