A Christmassy Time Of Year
Posted Dec 25, 2007
My loot so far, as crossposted to http://yarkramer.livejournal.com/47352.html ...
* Stick To Drawing Comics, Monkey Brain! by Scott Adams (the premise of which is that if he'd done so, he never would have gotten where he is today)
* The Far Side "Scared Silly" 2008 wall-calendar (the line between scary and silly is crossed rather quickly, and not just in The Far Side: watch any B-movie horror flick)
* Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson (I figure if I'm going to write cyberpunk, I might as well read some of it)
* A six-pack of bottles of cream soda (which I've referred to as my only vice)
* The Hogfather live-action movie, for both me and my sister (Pratchett, woohoo)
* A sweatshirt and a more or less matching pullover jacket-thing ("Useful" gifts, as explained in A Child's Christmas in Wales)
* Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, which is ... yes, I believe almost ten years old now (the original Lunar is now almost sixteen). My mother asked if I knew how hard it was to find; I emphatically replied that I did. This is why it has been on my birthday/christmas list long enough that its age has probably almost doubled in the interim.

Drama
Posted Dec 11, 2007
You know, one thing I've noticed about the H2G2 is how fairly closely-knit my particular circle of friends is. On top of that, it's *friendly*. Apart from a couple particular incidents years ago (but what *wasn't* years ago these days), there's been pretty much no flaming rows, or whining, or that kind of thing.
The context was that I'd been going to post a link to a rather humorous Livejournal post about dealing with internet drama, particularly in internet roleplay, but as far as I know, no one I RP with actually needs the advice (which boils down to "stop taking it seriously, this is silly"). I mean, this can't *just* be because most of the people I deal with are British (or, conversely, that everyone who *is* involved with drama is American). It probably has something to do with the fact that we're a rather small group, and an observation I've made to the effect that popularity means that not *only* intelligent people are interested in it. Plus the way the H2G2 makes it somewhat easier for said intelligent people to stick together without much intrusion from twits.

This must be Thursday. I never could get the hang of Thursdays ...

So, to any other Americans who happen to be on the H2G2: happy stuff-yourself-silly-with-turkey-day. I would have posted earlier today, but I was at my grandmother's house with my mom and sister, and the wireless internet connection there (I had my laptop) worked perfectly fine provided that I didn't actually try to actually view web pages.
So, my immediate family tends to ignore American football (and the rest of the world's idea of football (which is more appropriate for the name), and sports in general for that matter), and rowdy extended families unsettle us, so we left relatively early, and no regrets.

Another day, another 2 AM (local time) revision to my userpage
Posted Nov 12, 2007
Well, not exactly a revision per se, I've just added to it a bit and rearranged some other stuff.
Hmm. I wonder if it's starting to suffer from "feature bloat", so to speak. And I wonder if some of the additions that are neither (a) more history nor (b) expanding on ideas that I'd already established in discussion threads aren't just another case of "getting an idea, then throwing it in without due consideration as to whether it's a good idea" that I think may have plagued me in my high school H2G2 days ... (Anyone who knows me for what was eventually my atrociously bloated cast of characters knows exactly what I'm talking about there.)

Even more fascinating
Posted Sep 7, 2007
I joined the H2G2 in July 1, 1999. At least, that's when I made my userpage; I'm inclined to think that this is correct, though, since users 46994 and 46996 have each made precisely one post or page, and that on said date.
But (and here's the strange part) this is a bit longer than I'm seriously aware the Internet has existed. I mean ... I was *using* the Web at least as far back as 1996, but it's as if my brain hasn't properly registered the fact that there has been an Internet and a World Wide Web before the year 2000, and I get a vague sort of surprise when I see simultaneous references to the web and, say, 1997.
What an odd thing for a brain to do.
