The world is a colder place now.
The books sparked friendships and more.
Requiescat in pace.

Douglas Adams : a witty, intelligent, creative man. Such a tragic loss. My thoughts are with his family at this time.
The Hitchhikers is a classic, thr Dirk Gently novels inspired me to be a writer, The Meaning Of Liff is the funniest book ever, The Digital Village was such an inspired idea and his reign as Doctor Who's Script Editor (and Writer) was the zenith of Doctor Who itself. Everything he touched was pure class.
A shining star on Earth, now a shining star in the firmament.
Let's hope that the film of Hitchhikers which he so wanted to happen will see fruition as a tribute to the great man. Hats off to you, Mr Adams! You will be sadly missed but never, ever forgotten.
Love, light & peace to your wife and daughter, from Barnaby

Without DNA and THHGTHG I'd never have read any comic fantasy (now my favourite genre) or discovered this website. No matter how many times I read his books its always as if I am reading them for the first time. The world is a sadder place without him.

Douglas, I never really took myself to seriously, I enjoyed the travels with Arthur in the Guide, I laughed with and at Dirk Gently, but when I read Last Chance to see, I started to think long and hard. Thanks for opening up my mind. I will truly miss your work.

It's been said that you never truly die while the ripples of your life continue.
On that basis Douglas will be here for a long time to come.
So long and thanks..
Alan

Another late boy, only heard last night, I think everything has been said already. Just to add my condolences and say what a talent the man had that he reached so many people in so many walks of life.

when i heard, i didn't believe it.. it's something that's so hard to grasp...that i just can't..
if it hadn't been for me finding the guide, reading it and loving it, i definitely wouldn't be the person i am now..
if it wasn't for him....if it wasn't for him...
i never ever thought i'd write anything like this.....i always assumed he'd always be there... and in a way, he is.. just not how i'm used to it being...

It`s very true that Doug`s influence even brought people together. If one has something to laugh about with someone else, then a friendship grows very fast. The Universe will be very boring without him.

Dear h2g2 team,
Thank you for keeping the site going so well over the last 24 hours. Thank you for being there. Thank you for being Douglas's legacy. There must be plenty of tears...and it can't be easy.
Maggy
So long, and thanks...

It's all rather depressing, really.
My condolences to his family, friends - and all his fans.

Heard the German radio series, read the English books. The Pan edition with the 42 on the spine. Sat in a desert. Met a wonderful person. Talked to her because she read TRATEOTU. Spent hours quoting passages. Laughed like hell. Kept the friendship through dire times and sandy beaches. Wrote letters and quoted. Been doing that for the last 9 years. Maybe it saved my life ... or just my sanity.
Thanks for that.
Lying in hospital after having all four wisdom teeth extracted in one go. Read Dirk Gently. As soon as I was conscious enough to do so. Laughed till I spat blood. That got the staff worried.
Thanks for that.
Thanks for books that bring people together. Give strangers a place to start talking. Go somewhere with a towel that says "Don't Panic!" and one will be greeted by stangers.
Thanks for that.

When I heard that Douglas was dead I felt a loss that I can only equate to the feeling that comes from learning that your favourite childhood holiday spot is now a multi-storey carpark, or that the tree you used to climb in and hide has been cut down. Mr. Adam's death brings on the feeling I remember from the first day I had to go to school without the raggedy old towel I used to carry as a toddler.
Above everything else it is the suddeness, the sense of surprise, Das Unheimlich has snuck up and taken the place of something that was a very comfortable part of my life. His words remain, and as I never knew him personally, practically little has changed, except that my memories of giggling over pages of his words are framed by the mortality of the man who wrote them.
My heart goes out to those for whom his death has left a hole in their lives.
So long Doug, and thanks for all the memories.
