as someone already said, douglas adams did a lot for the world! i think it's incredible that all one has to say is "42" and is immediately identified as a HHGTTG fan. i was at the bookstore on friday, looking for the "trilogy" to buy, and all they had was "Mostly Harmless"... i'll be going to other bookstores on monday so i can find them all...
anyway, enough of my rambling. my condolences and hugs to his family, i hope they realize how many lives his books have touched.

I had to return to h2g2 to express my sorrow over DNA's passing. He touched so many lives, brought so many people together. He will be sorely missed.

Rush That Speaks Posted May 14, 2001
To anyone who just tuned in:
My black towel was five bucks from Rite Aid, and while it doesn't make me feel much better, I do feel that I'm showing respect by carrying it everywhere... And it reminds me that I am not hurting alone (fanwise; I just have no idea what it would be like right now had I actually known him).
So I'm doing "Better than ever; still terrible, though."
Carry on.

I sit here deeply moved and yet crying my heart out at the massive loss of Douglas Adams. It is though blurred vision from the tears that I am composing this.
I have never known Mr. Adams personally, but I always enjoyed his books immensely. I remember back when I was able to play HHGTTG on the Commodore 64, and having a heck of a time with it. I remember the paperback books that formed pictures on the cover - the famous "Don't Panic" towel being my favorite configuration - and the number "42" being hiden in the spines.
My family got me the Illustrated Version of the HHGTTG a few years back, and I couldn't have been happier. It now saddens me that such a great visionary such as Mr. Adams has passed on so unexpectedly, when we all thought that he would live forever, like so many other celebrities.
Actually, he will live forever. Through his books. Immoratality is hard to come by, but Mr. Adams managed to garner an amazingly huge following that will continue to thrive, both in the physical and the digital world. Long after the loss, he will live on - in his words, in his visions, in our minds, and in our hearts, for generations to come.
As I said earlier, he was a great visionary and I was happy to see an "Earth Edition" of H2G2 online, and even though I have never written an entry, I still feel privileged to have known him through his works.
To the family, I hope that these letters will help you though this difficult time. Reading these letters myself are just bringing forth the waterworks, but it helps me release the pent-up feelings inside me.
May God bless you and as everyone else is saying, So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish...

Growing up with the Guide has given me new insight on many things. May his memory live forever. And I think we can honestly say that he has his towel with him.

In the 21 years of listening/reading/watching Douglas's work I've thankfully gained a perspective on things that help me see the absurdity/difference about things in life - even my business card has "Forty-Two" inscribed on the back just begging for people to ask!
For this, I thank you Douglas.
My sincere heartfelt condolences to his family.

I have just returned from a weekend away - no TV, no newspapers, and was really shaken when I heard the news about DNA - similar to many researchers, parts of my life have been affected by his work - whether it be radio, TV, the books, or his efforts to make us aware of what is happening to the wildlife in Madagascar.
His style of writing also had an effect on other writers - many have even tried to copy his style and the H2G2 concepts, but none have succeeded.
He will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with his family.

DNA has by several means influenced my life. Although we didn't know each other, I feel deeply sorrow about what has happened. Let me put in German words, for this is my mother tongue:
Mein aufrichtiges Beileid gilt besonders Frau und Tochter. Alles Gute für die Zukunft. Ein Leben nach DNA wird nie ein Leben ohne DNA sein!

There was a terrible ghastly silence.
There was a terrible ghastly noise.
There was a terrible ghastly silence.

With great sadness, I offer my condolences and best wishes to Douglas Adams' family, friends and all those whose lives he has helped to guide, even if just a little.

i was in the pub last night taking the world apart with some friends when one of them broke the news about douglas. it was weird, i felt like i'd lost a friend and everyone else seemed to dissapear into thought. we raised a glass & said our goodbyes & saw the conversation spread from table to table. some people hearing the news afresh, others who already knew, reminiscing & swapping favorite quotes.
thanks doug for hitchikers & looking at space through traditionally british eyes. wherever you went, i hope they know how to make a decent cuppa.
