Yes. This conversation does appear to be getting stale...
How about some to make the place look colourful again...?

Well the are explosions and out of them shoot with form into me, see?
Is the bread still stale or have we baked a nice fresh loaf?

OwlofDoom Posted Mar 27, 2003
Aha. I think we've baked some warm cheesey-bread! And a garlic & coriander naan too! Can't imagine they'll get boring quickly...

naan: flatten grannies
I was thinking more of a nice softgrain bread made with a bread machine (cos me mum has one)

#bereave 3
(That's NetHack command for "steal south-east", btw)
I want bread machine, I want bread machine!

Well:
cout<<"the world in going mad?"<>yes
that has absolutely nothing to do with the thing happening with that country. I've had a few
I visited the nethack page, what is that ASCII pic meant to be?

OwlofDoom Posted Mar 28, 2003
It's supposed to look a bit like a level in NetHack (you can play nethack in console mode on systems with no graphics support, like vt100, and many/most people choose to play it in text mode anyway, as it adds to the mystery and makes it easy to see everything on the level at once). That particular level is based on the first town level in a typical game of Slash'EM, but the Gnomish Mines' Town in NetHack often looks very similar.
Get yourself off to http://nethack.sourceforge.net/common/index.html for more information on this game (seriously, once you get into it, it's the best game _ever_ made).

Well I go to install the rpm and get a dependencies problem:
libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.3) is needed.
Now I could rant on and on about how much dependencies problems me off, but I won't.
I shall try the source version.

OwlofDoom Posted Mar 29, 2003
Eeeek, that's one of the most important RPMs you don't have there! Most C programs depend on that!
You on Mandrake (istr...)? If so, run this:
rpm -Uhv ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/glibc-2.3.1-10mdk.i586.rpm
as root. That'll fix said dependency problem.

Well I do that, I leave it to download and when I come back I get this:
error: failed dependencies:
initscripts < 6.91-18mdk conflicts with glibc-2.3.1-10mdk
glibc = 2.2.5 is needed by locales-2.3.1.3-7mdk
glibc = 2.2.5 is needed by locales-2.3.1.3-7mdk
glibc = 2.2.5-16mdk is needed by glibc-devel-2.2.5-16mdk
Something tells me that mandrake is screwed up. You don't have to help me with this.
Anyway it was my birthday today

Aha. You need to install the equivalent versions of locales and glibc-devel _at the same time_ ... bit annoying that. On debian, APT manages all that by itself.
Go into an empty dir and (not as root):
wget ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/glibc-2.3.1-10mdk.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/locales-2.3.1.4-6mdk.i586.rpm ftp://ftp.rpmfind.net/linux/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandrake/RPMS/glibc-devel-2.3.1-10mdk.i586.rpm
(that's all one line, btw).
Then (as root) do:
rpm -Uhv *.rpm
(assuming they're the only rpms in that dir).
Should work. Not sure if that's the right version of _locales_ though.

Well I shall try that this evening but knowing my luck it won't work.
Anyway I got a CD burner yesterday and burn a iso of knoppix to cd so I could show one of my sceptical mates the delights of linux without him having to install it.
Flour, water, oil, sugar, salt, yeast?

Good work! Gentoo do one of those CDs with the shareware version of Unreal Tournament (incidentally I have the full version working under linux better than I had it under windoze on the same hardware) on...
