One of my distant ancestors left England for the New World, departing form Liverpool. We don't know if he was originally from Liverpool, or just sailed from there.

I know many charge for their services etc, but have you ever thought of a ancestry search type web-page Paul ? Family tree stuff etc ?

Well, then Boston Public Library has (or at least had) a genealogy of the Bemis family (my mother's line). One of the branches ended with Abel Bemis, who married Prudence Swan. My mother's family was able to trace the six or seven generations after that, so they're set for the Bemises.

On my father's side (the sea captains who started with that guy from Liverpool), much of the material would be in Anapolis, Nova Scotia, but they lost the records pertaining to my father's father. There may still be a chance that cousins from that line independently made breakthroughs. Maybe someday we can piece together what the cousins (if any) came up with. There was a great-great aunt who lived into her late nineties. She was form a family of eight, but most of the brothers died young, probably of TB. I guess if you managed to escape the infectious diseases and didn't travel in sinking boats, you had a chance at longevity.

My sister was building a family tree up but! unfortunately didn't keep a back-up disc and earlier in this year they had their house broke into and apart from many items etc nicked - the laptop that had that information on it was among the items - all lost
