He-he....dispite your first little adventure into the "yo' mama" thread, and what it might lead you to believe, trust me you have actually found intelligence here!
I'm US as well(Alabama...yeah, ok...redneckville!).
If you'll click on the "my space"button(upper left of your screen) it will take you back to your personal page. Write something in there(click on "edit page")....ANYTHING!!! After you do that an ACE will be around shortly to help you out.
If not, just click on my nickname above and post me a message. I'll help if I can, if I can't I'll find someone who can!
Welcome to H2G2! Believe me...you'll enjoy it here!

Hello, I am English and yes, I would call myself intelligent and educated as are many people on H2G2. You will find many students on the site, but during the day (GMT) it seems to be predominantly office workers. Conversations at that time are very busy and and fast moving. People are usually quite friendly and will be happy to try and help you out should you need it.
By the way, it is perhaps a bit unfortunate that one of the first places you stopped by was the insult thread which is not particularly amusing now, although it was funny when it first started.
Feel free to visit my space (click on my name above) to find out more. As has been previously mentioned, if you give yourself a user name and put a bit of a blurb about yourself, you will appear a bit more interesting to others who stop by. An Ace will greet you formally, but if I can be of any help, please feel free to contact me.

Thought I'd drop by and say 'Hi!' as well.
Can't really add anything to what's already been written. Though, be prepared to spend some weeks/months here before you really get the hang of the place... it's huge, divers and generally good fun, plus a great source of information.

Hello, WELCOME to h2g2, I won't stay long as I'm just off to alert the moderators about the disgusting conversation you were unfortunate to join in on; please believe me; this is COMPLETELY atypical; & we'll try & get it stopped ASAP.
In the meantime, if you want to find some people who are intelligent AND have bagfuls of creative NOT cruel humour, try this site, it's very new, you may not understand the rationale behind it; but that doesn't matter, there are great people there!
I've added you to my list of friends so I can contact you here, you're welcome to talk to me on my Personal space anytime, just click on the highlighted nickname above.
If you put ANYTHING into your space for now (even ITS ME!) using the "edit" button, people will be able to contact you more easily.
speak to you soon. Click on this if you want to go to the site I mentioned (say Terri sent you, or look for mrs the wife, who has also alerted the moderators)

Hi there! I'm Shea, and I'm also in the U.S. ... in New York! Please don't be put off by some of the conversations you seem to have stumbled on. Sometimes people like to throw insults at each other, but it's all kidding ... or at least I think it is. I left that particular convo a while ago, because since I couldn't take the heat, I left that kitchen.
If you're interested, I made a page with a list of links that you might like to check out. It's at A534953
And if you click on that "edit" button on your Personal Space, and type in something ... anything! People can leave you messages. It's easier to find your way around here if you've got a friend or two to help show the way.

Hello Researcher 211101! Hello Everyone *waves* My Personal Space doesn't usually get this busy
Sorry I wasn't around earlier to reply to you straightway, but you've certainly got a response, in my absence! There are most certainly plenty of intelligent and interesting people at h2g2 (as you've seen here) and I hope you come back to see us soon.

I think I speak for those who participate in the thread you are referring to (What's wrong with... h2g2 researchers?), when I say that we a) would very much like you to not start yikesing the nearly 1300 postings. I suggest you consider the facts that a) the thread was started and continued largely unmoderated when there still was 'proper' moderation; b) we keep the thread contained in itself; c) 211101 was greeted in that thread and informed about it purpose; d) we all follow the rule in posting one that none of the contents are meant seriously.

Hello, Tube, for replying to me. I'm sure you all think I'm just a horrible spoilsport, & a B.O.F at that; you may or may not be right!
If you'd like to see more about what I felt about last night, please go to my space & read what I've put in the conversation "Hi Terri" (under my Guide Entry)
If you want to start a discussion about this, please do so there, then everyone knows where to go & can see my views on the matter.
Terri.
