Decadent into the new year
aka Bel - A87832164 Started conversation Jan 3, 2012
So, my sons gave me a laptop for my birthday. Yesterday I went and bought a mouse because I can't be bothered with the mouse pad. I bought some more things, like a Dual USB Power Adapter, so I can now charge my ebook reader and mp3 player (which will arrive this week) even if I'm not anywhere near a PC.
This morning, it suddenly occurred to me that I can access the internet without having to get up (the laptop has WLAN). This must be the hight of decadence - but then I guess I am now entitled to being decadent at times, as I'm half a century old now.
Shame I have to get up and get ready to work. I could get used to having a lazy day.

You have generous sons (I got a box of Ferrero Rocher from Andrew) but I am also a laptop convert, Gordon bought me this for
(by the way I am not still in bed, I'm sitting at the dining room table)

I'd have to clear my dining room table first.
It's not a new laptop, but A's old one (he's still paying for the new one he had bought himself a couple of months ago, but he had intended to sell this one until I asked him to give it to me for my birthday.
I'm not a laptop convert (yet), but it certainly has its advantages.

We have a load of laptops in our family (El has two!) but I still prefer the desktop computer for any serious writing, as the keyboard is much faster. I can type as fast as I can talk on the main computer, but I find the laptop keyboard takes a bit of getting used to. Also, that mouse pad gets in the way - I keep tipping it while I type and it moves the cursor to somewhere else. So I have to turn it off when typing.

I agree and use my keyboard for the serious typing.
And worse I don't use my laptop at school because nowadays the school attaches loads of stuff to your laptop if you want to use it there, and our techies proved its not all removed when you leave, which ended badly for them

Happy Birthday Bel.
Let me tell you what Laptop Decadence really is...
I have a netbook which is minute attached to my big screen TV on the other side of the room and I have a wireless keyboard and mouse. I can post to you while sitting in an armchair with the mouse resting on the arm ready to jump into action.
Could someone peel me a grape?

Thank you all.
I'm with Gnomon: for working I prefer my desktop PC. The laptop is nice for reading, and typing the odd post or email, though.

Bel, lady of leisue and laptop...
Congratulations, you baby, on reaching the half-century mark. The best is yet to come, of that we're sure...
Many happy returns.

Thank you.
The old lady I saw today (she's 86) told me that the years between 40 and 60 are the best.

Control panel ->mouse->pointing device usually says something like Touchpad, (mine is Synaptic TouchPad). Go to the tab labelled device settings and click disable then click ok or apply. The laptop should then default to your mouse.
