i may have the answer from a` programme i watched one night.
-
when the compnay you get the internet gets busy, depending how far you are from a junction box can mean the diff of what megs you get at the time.
-
we have an advert on the same lines, where a man, cant get into a laptop, and says, its after 6pm.
-
could be at the time you lose signal strenght, there is a corisponding upserge, on the network. jimbob

I guess it should concern all sites in that case, Jim, but it's only BBC sites which are affected.
Pingu, this has been going on for more than two weeks now, and the weather has only gone bad this weekend.

have you tryed the new signin for the mbiplayer, to see if you can use it with the new id. and see how you acsess that.
-
if you have no problem then it as to be the h2g2, and when you get the new id one for here the problem could be solved. worth a try. jimbob

Dmitri Gheorgheni, Post Editor Posted Dec 22, 2009
The fact that the problem is time-dependent and only involves the BBC makes me suspect it's your service provider, for two reasons:
- The time of day would indicate a problem with traffic volume.
- The BBC site is a massive site, so the problem would show up there first. (The company I used to work for provides an online game that is massive - people always complain 'This is the only one I have trouble with' - yes, the one with gigabyte-sized updates.)

so you think i was on the right track, company provider, not providing the full megs.
-
i think prof had the same problem a few weeks back. and found in his case, he cant upgrade, as the bt line wont take it. jimbob

You would think the problem would occur when everybody is at home at their PCs. Oh well, if it's my provider, I'd better get used to it.
In case anybody missed me...
Dmitri Gheorgheni, Post Editor Posted Dec 22, 2009
No, if it's the provider, call them and ask them what to do to maximise your service.
There may be something you can do.

Yes, you're probably ight. I'm having enough trouble with my husband as it is, though, won't add anything to that if I can avoid it. (Long story, don't ask).

More PCs are still used at work than at home, I think.
When all the webcomic sites slow down, I know people are just coming in to work in the US

Bel, they do 'manage' traffic when it is busy, and it is not to everyone's liking! It could be the surge in Christmas traffic with everyone buying online meaning they are having trouble coping with big sites.
I can always tell if there are problems if Google is slow loading, which rarely happens, and that site is big.
Hope it starts behaving itself soon.

hi
-
you could always check with the company to see if by any chance there is a place on the same network, with powerfull computers that are on at the times you find the problem.and could be draining the smaller systems, in the way if someone used hight lecy, i would weaken the surounding area.
-
if you find this is the case, it can be looked into. you pay for a sevice and if you cant use it at the times you said, then it as to be a drain of power on the network jimbob

B'El, try something like this, to check your speeds
http://www.broadband-finder.co.uk/broadband-tools/line-check.html
and maybe contact your ISP and see if they have any answers ??

dont take this as gospel, but ive spoke with a couple of friends, not on the h2g2, and both said the crash, wouldnt have been because of the disc cleanup.
-
the d, cleanup is a way to recycle the temp files, if anyone as low space, you get a warning bubble, and d, cleanup, is the way to return the temps to the unused space.
-
there will probably be a pc geek on h2g2, that will agee or disagree, as i said, dont take as gospel. jimbob x

Sorry you're having problems getting on, Bel. At least you can still get to Lexulous to beat the stuffing out of me once again. I hope whatever it is, it's sorted soon.
Meanwhile, hope you'll have a really happy holiday.

Hi Bel, I can't help as I don't have a PC, I was going to buy a netbook with a pay and go dongle, but what I've been finding out about it I'm not going to bother, as your on a PC it seems many things can go wrong and I don't think I was cut out to use a PC I have one at home windows98 and thats as slow its not connected to broadband as it don't have USB everything now WindowsXP etc. I could load a game go to town do my shopping and it'll still be loading, when my mobile don't work propaly I go balistic so imagin a PC, firwalls, viruses, etc I just can't be doing with them, I onced used my brother PC and I nearly wiped a very important file they might be fun but one has to know what your doing. My brother works for a company called Critical Path he deals with PCs and what do you call them he makes something for PCs not quite sure as its far to complecating for me to understand I'm not a Technical boffin! So what I've been reading here I deff not having a upto date PC ever they make me my partner Dave has one windows XP hes not even got broadband he works with them all day at work and loathes them he just uses his to do his bills and stuff on I don't even go near it they scare me do death and they give me migrains looking at the screen, I've used one at LearnDirect kept having breaks every 10mins giving me a banging head, even tho they turned down the brightness etc still made my I'm also partley sighted which makes it difficult only having the one eye, so no thanks you can keep your PCs=personal computers I wouldn't have one if they where giving them away with free for ever broadband. Hope you gets yours sorted soon as someone said it could be the bad frost and weather we've been having your from Germany? the Temps over there gone right down to -33 so that could be it. Take care Dale.
