my dad was one of those blokes that had to twiddle with his car, even though nothing was wrong.

Tell hubby, if he keeps on upsetting your computer, you'll get professional folk to it and send him the billsmiley - evilgrin

Well, the husband hasn't done anything to upset the PC. Must be windows, it de-activated my sound settings only the other day.
Took me a while to find out what was wrong, and to get them back.

Gnomon - time to move on

Last week was Microsoft Update week. New versions of the operating system were sent out to most PCs automatically on Wednesday or Thursday. These may have introduced small differences into many programs.

My Windows Vista seems to be working slightly better than before.

I think I have my settings to 'no automatic updates'. Not sure, though. smiley - erm

Have you tried doing a system restore? If, for example, your virus scanner updates regularly, it should set a restore point every time, so the problem should be easy to pinpoint.

As for the loss of posts or entries - which browser are you on? In Opera (I'm not sure about Firefox, don't currently have it installed here) when you click "back" it'll still have your text in the text box for you - then you can at least copy it and save it, or try again later. smiley - smiley

Oh, but that's only when brief loss of internet connection doesn't coincide with 'hootoo playing up'. smiley - rolleyes

Yes, I recently told my virus scan to set a system restore point, but I have no idea how I go about restoring it. smiley - silly

It works then, too, given the right browser.

Ok - System restore. I'll assume you have a German XP, so I'll give you the path in German....

First, close all programs you have running.

Then go to: Start - Programme - Zubehör -
Systemprogramme - Systemwiederherstellung.

Mark "Computer zu einen früheren Zeitpunkt wiederherstellen" and hit "Weiter" - then pick a date (as near as possible to the time when the net stopped working, or you'll have to reinstall a lot of things) and just follow the prompts from there.

It won't affect your documents or e-mails, but naturally, anything you've installed after then will have to be reinstalled.

For hamsters:

Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.

Restore my computer to an earlier time, and then click Next

smiley - ok Sure.

If it doesn't work, you can reverse the system restore, too.

Back up your most vital data, especially before you let hubby at it, just in case, but that should be a given anyway, regularly backing up data smiley - tongueincheek

Oh, the husband won't delete/destroy anything, he's the one who knows about PCs. I honestly think he thought he'd do me a favour when he exchanged the cable slot with the USB ports slots.
Plus, I wouldn't know how to do a backup - I'd have to burn a CD rom, I guess? PC is old and doesn't do that anymore. I'm lucky if CD roms can be read.

You have all those USB ports - your best bet would be either a USB stick or an external hard drive smiley - winkeye

Do your sons? Or will they let you use an mp3 player for the purpose? Just to transfer it to a different machine, and delete it there. Or use the storage card from a digital camera.

Might be worth buying anyway, I've seen 1GB for as low as 7€...

(Must smiley - run to Uni now, see you later! smiley - smiley)
