John Ridgway Save the Albatross Voyage 2003-4
AIM: TO PREVENT THE NEEDLESS SLAUGHTER OF THE ALBATROSSHi, I'm Carol Knutson
I'll be sailing with John Ridgway on Leg 4 - Melbourne, Australia to Wellington, New Zealand - as a BirdLife Volunteer.
For the past four years, I have been employed by the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society of New Zealand (Forest and Bird). This is New Zealand’s leading, independent conservation organisation and the New Zealand BirdLife Partner.
My work at Forest and Bird includes campaign promotion, education and website development. We have two websites, www.forestandbird.org.nz that features our conservation work and www.kcc.org.nz - our popular children's site.
Over the past year I have helped coordinate our national Save the Albatross campaign. During this time my knowledge, interest and passion for the albatross has grown. The albatross is an amazing animal.
Outside of work my interests include painting and sailing. And last year I published a children's conservation and colouring book with a friend. I have travelled in USA, UK and Australia. Now 29, I live in Wellington and share a house with four others.
I’m really looking forward to sailing from Australia to New Zealand. I have sailed coastal passages around New Zealand, but this will be my first ocean sail. Some of my sailing experience has been aboard the ‘Spirit of New Zealand’ as volunteer crew. It is a sail training ship. I enjoy life on a yacht and follow the mantra ‘Everything in its place and a place for everything – especially on a boat!’
I am excited, and feel privileged, to be a crew member on this voyage.
